Granderson to the Yanks?
    #11609696 -

I'm reading that this trade is getting close to being done.

Yanks get Granderson.

Tigers get Max Scherzer, Daniel Schlereth, Phil Coke and outfield prospect Austin Jackson.

Diamondbacks get Edwin Jackson and Ian Kennedy.

I'm not a huge baseball fan like a lot of you here, so I have no idea who gets the better of this.  As a casual Tigers fan, I loved Granderson, but he has underperformed since his monster year a few years ago.

I know absolutely nothing about the players the Tigers are getting, so I can't speak on that.

Tigers are in a payroll dump getting serious pitching volume at low prices.  D-Backs are getting one and a quarter good pitchers.  Eh, maybe Kennedy will do well in the N(ot so good) League.

I think this is a killer deal for the Yanks.  Total prospect in Jackson, soso reliever, and a not likely to ever pitch for them starter.  A bona fide all-star in his prime for a bag of doughnuts.  I'll take it.  As an added bonus it puts more pressure on Damon to be reasonable.

Liquid Smoke is as insightful as he always is.  Thank you for your input, LS, and keep up the good work.

Are any of the players the Tigers get actually going to make a difference next year (or the next)?

Curtis Granderson also has a career as a successful television actor, a main character on both The West Wing and the hit USA detective comedy Psych.

The Yankees are the clear winners in this deal, to me. The Tigers got a little bit worse, but they save some money. I think the D-Backs got took.

I just gotta wonder what they knew about Sherzer that maybe the rest of us don't.  It seems a little premature to have given up on him.  Edwin Jackson is OK but I thought Sherzer was supposed to be the tits.  Ian Kennedy is surely nobody's idea of a prospect by now.

I was asking OMR about this earlier when I heard, but he didn't know anything about it.

What does this mean for Melky?

Scherzer is miles and miles ahead of Edwin Jackson, in my opinion. He might be most valuable player in the trade because he has so many more years of team control. The D'Backs got robbed blind. Edwin Jackson is a 4th starter at best that had a lucky year. Ian Kennedy is maybe a 5th starter if he stays healthy.

And the D'Backs lose out even more when you consider the fact that Scherzer has different colored eyes. How cool is that?

Melky is trade bait if they can resign Damon.

No.  Melky is a cheap, good player who is still on the improve.  The only player he was trade bait for was Granderson.  Which is not to say that they definitely won't trade him, just that I don't think he is being actively shopped.

He will play left most of the time.  I see them resigning Damon for maybe two years at around 11 per with him playing mostly DH and occasional left.

Which is your opinion, not a statement of fact.  Clearly the D-Backs, who know him far better than any of us, disagree.  That whole end of the deal seems very strange.  I'm very curious to see how that part of it shakes out over the next few years.

It's pretty much the consensus opinion that Scherzer is better than Jackson, and it's my opinion as well. 200 K's are a possibility for Scherzer in 2010. I see Jackson regressing quite a bit, and Chase Field can only hurt.

Maybe, but the consensus opinion doesn't include the people who know the most about him.  Or me.  Edwin Jackson was far better than Sherzer last year, is only one year older and has gotten better each year.  That is not true of Sherzer.  He regressed badly last year.

Jackson was legitimately better last year, I'll give you that. He first half was good, but it was also lucky. Lucky enough to make him look like an ace for a little bit. He collapsed in the second half. He still doesn't miss very many bats, his command isn't very good and he's home prone pitcher moving to one of the top hitters parks in the game. Chase Field is just a bad fit for Jackson. I fail to see how Scherzer regressed. If anything, his stock goes up when you consider the fact that he threw 175 innings, his K/9 held up and his walk rate improved. Moving out of Chase Field field and onto a team with much better defenders will help him greatly, also.

I'm not real big on the value of total Ks for a pitcher.  I'll take DP grounders any day but that's OK.  Scherzer's WHIP sucked, 1.34, I believe, Jackson's was 1.26.  Their K/bb rates were very close and Jackson faced 9 hitters every night, as opposed to the 8 Scherzer saw.  He was also more durable but that isn't much of a big deal due to sample size

I don't know how you can mention Jackson's regression toward the mean when you look at how Scherzer finished.  3 good, 3 bad and 4 mediocre.

You can love him.  I'm not going to.

Are you showing me those because of the projections?  Which were made when Scherzer was in the NL and Jackson was in the AL?

Bill James also said Sammy Sosa was going to steal 100 bases in a year.  I like James but I've been reading him for over 20 years and his projections don't mean shit.  Like everybody else's.

Granderson will be a fucking beast playing on the Yanks.

There's rumors afoot about a possible trade with the Jays for Halladay. Oh boy.

I posted them in case you didn't know how downright awful Jackson had been before 2009.
