**it's a ferret**

lol..i know and i want one really bad, but they are illegal here in a hawaii.  i forgot an essential word in the first post...lol

so instead of me being able to get one legally, i'd have to catch one of these hissing mongooses(mongeese?) and risk getting my body severely ripped up in the process.

You're actually gonna catch a wild mongoose and train it? That's amazing. I doubt it though. Maybe you can. What do I know?

I lived in Hawaii for twelve years, not sure of ferrets but there are about more than 100,000 wild mongoose here. They were brought to kill rats and keep them out of crops but the mongoose becasme a worse problem than the rats.

Bufo toads are also in Hawaii by the hundreds of thousands. Drive around Oahu Island on a spring rainy day and see the dead toad skins along the roads. Also Mongooses are smashed on a daily basis in the Islands.

mj

And do not foreget there are also over three hundred wallabys on Oahu Island in hawaii. Rock Wallabys.

Hawaiian Rock Wallaby

Pacific Adventures traces the origin of the Rock Wallaby that colonized in Kalihi Valley some seventy-five years ago. The marsupial is native to Australia and become established in Hawaii when three animals escaped from a zoo keeper. Scientists believe Hawaii's rock wallabies have evolved into a new species.

Oahu has wild pigs and goats in its mountain valleys. Brush-tailed rock-wallabies, accidentally released in 1916, reside in the Kalihi Valley. Although rarely seen, the wallabies are of interest to zoologists because they may be an extinct subspecies in their native Australia.

Wandering wallaby released

By Curtis Lum
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Tabalanza family of Foster Village didn't have to travel to the land Down Under to come face to face with a rock wallaby.

Linda Haller, director of shelter operations at the Hawaiian Humane Society, looks in on the wallaby that was captured in Foster Village. The small relative of a kangaroo was later freed to join its wild colony in Kalihi Valley.
Richard Ambo ? The Honolulu Advertiser

The miniature kangaroo showed up in the Tabalanzas' back yard on Kukila Street yesterday morning. The wallaby was munching on grass when he was sighted.

The family called police, who notified the Hawaiian Humane Society. Animal experts caught the hopping marsupial with a fish net and brought him to the Humane Society for a quick checkup.

The wayward wallaby was turned over to state wildlife officials, who released it yesterday afternoon in its Kalihi Valley habitat, said Humane Society spokeswoman Eve Holt.

Rock wallabies, native to Australia, have established a colony in Kalihi Valley. State officials estimate there are anywhere from 40 to 250 wallabies on O'ahu.

The wallaby is a type of kangaroo but is much smaller, standing only about knee-high and weighing 8 to 13 pounds.

In 1916, three wallabies were brought from Australia to a private zoo on 'Alewa Heights. Neighborhood dogs attacked the wallabies, killing a young wallaby. Two adult wallabies escaped.

The wallaby pair established a colony that continues to thrive in Kalihi Valley.

Wallabies once inhabited the area from Nu'uanu to Halawa Valley, but an increase in homebuilding, as well as dogs, narrowed their range to the steep cliffs and dry caves of Kalihi Valley.

mj and so the Rock wallabies rock once again. now over three hundred have been tag since they originally escaped in 1916 into the Kilihi Valey and Tantalus and Rountop region of oahu.

My friend David Orr, head of the Waiamea arboretum on the North Shore says that some have now been sighted in that area. This is on the north end of Oahu. SO they hav made their way across the mountains tot he north Shore.

Maybe they want to go surf?

Baby mongoose make swell pets. Read Riki Tiki Tavi by Rudyard kipling for a tale of a mongoose who is so cool you will love the story.

mj

And yes They make good pets. I have a friend who has one.

mj

Any or I might say most baby animals can be domesticated. I said domesticated not tamed. Tames animals are like circus animals they respnd to whips and loud noises to position theirselves on stools in cages. Domesticated animals eat vetarian dried foods and are raised in families from one generation to another, as are the tigers and jaguars and leopards of Thialnd and SE Asia. and of course the elephants which take twenty years to train.

Oh, so they got flattened by car tires?  :frown: I thought maybe they served some purpose in having their skins were discarded on the road.  I'll look them up.

Bufo is the Latin word for toads.

Ferrets are cool, but they are little kleptomaniacs. On Okinawa there was this little hill behind our house and I used to go back there and sit and watch the ocean. Every now and then a mongoos would come bouncing down the little trail and watch me. You had to look out for the booby traps left over from WW2 though.
