Antidepressants
    #11614928 -

Ok, so my girlfriend has been going through some rough times; her dad is terminally ill (cancer), her schoolwork is time-consuming, and I tend to stress her out too. Well, her therapist has suggested antidepressants. Supportingly, her mom and friends agree.

I, on the other hand, am quite wary of the idea. As a Neuroscience major, I am extensively aware of the adverse effects, but I am no doctor, nor am I a therapist. So, I'm at a standstill. I'd like to hear from others with personal experience with antidepressants; either as a user or as a close friend of a user. There's nothing more I want to see than to see my girl happy because she's really been down in the dumps lately. I just want to make sure that antidepressants are the right thing for her to do.

Anti-Depressants are pretty safe man.  There are the POSSIBLE side effects, but those tend to be few and far between from my understanding, of course this is all depending on the anti-depressant that they want to put her on.

My girlfriend has been on fluoxetine for quite a while with no side effects whatsoever, besides not being depressed obviously.  I myself have been on them for short periods of time when I was younger.

Try to keep in mind this more than likely is only temporary.  And be supportive in the decision she decides to make, it her choice no matter how you feel about it.

how extensive of a toll are these "rough times" having on her?  i mean, if it's a passing phase, i'd recommend she try to work through it without medication as well.  if possible take up some meditative healing like yoga or something.  working out is proven to help combat typical depression.

however, if she's been diagnosed with clinical depression that extends beyond just the rough patch, it may be a different story.

i dated a girl who was on meds for manic depression.  she got on the meds like 2 years into our relationship.  but it took quite a while for them to find the scripts that worked for her.  every drug they give her at first is just going to be a test essentially.  they need to see how she reacts to the medication.  so depending on how her mind takes to the drugs, she could endure some relatively extensive medication without really having progressed anywhere beyond the depression.  at least, that's what i saw in my ex.

as a general rule of thumb though, i tend to keep my own body as free of pharms as i can.  particularly in regards to prescriptive fads like ADD and depression.

They work for some people.

But a recent study provided evidence that intense exercise several times a week was able to provide the same benefits.

But, it's hard to keep a solid regimen for most people. Most people I know think its easier to 'take a pill' than do any real work to benefit themselves - but I think it is to their detriment.

We should learn to provide happiness for ourselves, and learn to deal with life as it comes. Of course, these are just my feelings - I trust that her heart will lead her to her own judgments regarding this matter - and ultimately - that is all that matters.

Have a grate day.

yeah it really depends the person imo.  i kind of am on both sides so idk the help that i can give you.

i was on a lot of antidepressants (300mg Effexor, 20mg lexapro and 15mg Abilify once a day) at one time and they didnt really work in the way i thought they would.  SSRIs work GREAT for people that have mood swings.  it keeps you very leveled out, so you dont get highs and lows (im sure you know this).  the thing is i was never depressed so these really did nothing for me but increase my appetite.

on the other hand my mom has just started taking antidepressants (one month) and she is A LOT better.  she used to cry a lot and get very emotional about little things, i think she was just triggered by these things.  its helped her through our new move and shes a lot better off (shit im a lot better off, i have to live with her).

theyre probably going to try lexapro first, and imo lexapro isnt very good.  its the most standard SSRI.  i would say Abilify is your best bet, if you choose to go it.  its a very modern medicine and i was almost considering staying on it.  you can also expect a lot quicker results with ablilify than the others, at least the ones i was on.

please note that these are my opinions and im not trying to tell you what to do.  but in my concerns for your girlfriends health these are my best experienced guesses.

It appears that doctors as well as the general public overestimate the effectiveness of anti-depressants, and SSRIs in particular. They are, in fact, not a panacea by a long shot. In addition to the research AroundtheSon points so, I might add that various forms of psychotherapy are usually about as effective as SSRIs. Also, don't underestimate the side effects of SSRIs. Yes, the severe side effects such as suicidal tendencies are extremely rare and possibly even non-existent, but drastic reduction in libido (especially in women, it seems) and weight gain are common as muck.

I base the above on first-hand experience, extensive discussions with family members with medical educations as well as experience with depressive disorders and some off-hand research on my own part.

When my mom popped them she let us do anything.

We used to blaze up in the house all day and she was too high on pills to care.  When she stopped the blazing stopped.

Thats all I know.

she needs to get on an exercise regimine, maybe some yoga, and if she still needs an extra push I would try Kira brand St Johns Wort and maybe some 5-htp.

Antidepressants just seemed to make things worse for me and only last about 5 days before I flushed them back when I went through a rough period.  Kira brand st johns wort in correlation with some exercise did wonders for me, and sometimes I would take some 5-htp just to help with sleep.

After writing multiple college term papers on various aspects of antidepressants there is no way in hell I would even consider taking anything of that nature again, plus it seems that they only work for about 15% of people taking them....  not a great figure

I expect placebo would be just as good as any OTC.

Kira brand is what is prescribed by many doctors in European nations for depression rather than traditional SSRI drugs

i can vouch for both of these occurrences in my ex.  the weight gain was particularly drastic.

I have been on Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac, and Wellbutrin in the past, none of them helped at all.  Paxil gave me an extreme case of limp dick and I swear even now, 3.5 years later, I still can't get it up like I used to before Paxil... :crankey: All of the first three made me feel emotionally dead, and wellbutrin made me feel nauseous 24/7 for the first two weeks I took it.

Wellbutrin did seem to work ALITTLE.  I could tell I was just very slightly more motivated, but not by much.  It was still hard as hell to find the willpower to get up to take a piss in the morning.  It did help me quit smoking though, something I had been trying to do for a year prior with no success.

My dad on the other hand used to be a very unpleasant man to be around when I was a kid, sometimes violent, but he started taking Wellbutrin and going to a shrink once a month for just a few months and now he's MUCH better.  I haven't had a real fight with him in years, he's usually in a good mood these days.  It definitely improved his quality of life and the quality of life for our family.  Same story for my mom.  I guess I'm just not that lucky...

oh I forgot about libido too, I can vouch that the few days I was on Zoloft my penis was just for show, and having a steady gf at the time I couldn't let that happen

yeah and i wanna make another point SSRIs if not taken right can have bad side effects.  not REALLY bad but you can def notice them.

if i skipped one day when i was on them i would seriously get these head rushes.  doctor said it was blood pressure but idk.  it made my brain feel like it was disconnected from my body..

This is the best answer, most of my family used antidepressants in the past untill they realize that they were getting addicted to it, having the same routine, and getting balance with the pills, that's wrong. the best way to keep stress out it's to do the things that you like.

Spending the free time in cinema, going to the gymn, whatever you like to do, the pills might give you a help in hard times, but it won't work for your entire life.

When I was taking Zoloft the world became "gray." I was never really happy or really sad. I just... was. I didn't listen to music. I lost every ounce of my creativity, stopped doing photography. And then the sexual side effects. No sex drive at all. When I did somehow get aroused I wasn't always able to get off. All the girls I've talked to said that their sex lives were ruined while on antidepressants because they could NEVER get off.

I just weaned myself off of Wellbutrin, but the side effects were minimal. It had some sexual side effects (sometimes had trouble getting it up/keeping it up), but compared to an SSRI, the side effects were very mild. I still was able to experience real emotions, listened to music, and did photography. Plus it had the added benefit of making me smoke a lot less.

If she does go on them, I would HIGHLY suggest that she avoids SSRIs. I'm not sure how NSRI generally effect people because they're fairly new. Wellbutrin is a reuptake inhibitor for both dopamine and norepinephrine, so maybe NSRIs are the way to go. I'd tell her to give Wellbutrin a try if she really thinks they'd help her.

Edit: Just read through the thread and I forgot to mention the weight gain side effects. Throughout highschool the doc changed me from Prozac to Paxil to Zoloft. I was a fat motherfucker. I'm talking 6'4" and 290lbs at my worst. Most girls I know that start SSRIs balloon up big time, like gaining 20-30lbs in a few months.

Yes, THIS. Iirc, it took me about a week or so to get rid of those, back when I quit my daily dose of 20mg seroxat after about two years of use. Btw, I quit taking them pillz 'cause I couldn't drink any bubbly sodas when using them, on the penalty of extreme stomach pains.

Btw, the limp dick thing is the only thing that sometimes makes me want to revert to SSRI use...I imagine it's the easiest treatment for my premature ejac. I used to enjoy normal sexual functioning when I was on SSRIs, but not so anymore.

Yep, I had the "brain zaps" for a few weeks too.  It was REALLY bad the first several days because it would happen at least once a minute.  It felt like my brain was being electrocuted, my vision would shake like my brain was getting electrocuted.  I thought it was going to drive me to suicide at one point it was so ridiculous.
