Have a roach problem? I have a solution (finally)

I've had roaches trying to set up shop in my apartment for the last 6 months or so. Since I am a big science nerd, I naturally wanted to “experiment” with several different treatments to find the most effective one. Here are the things that I have tried with varying success or failure:

- Hardcore pesticides… by hardcore I mean you have to wear a respirator, rubber gloves, safety goggles, long sleeves and pants to apply them safely

- Sealing all cracks/holes with either expanding foam or steel wool

- Keeping old food scraps in the fridge till trash day, not leaving any crumbs around

- Dumping bleach in any possible water source for the roaches before bed (particularly drain traps and toilets)

- Asking my fat slob of a neighbor to try to keep her place cleaner since the roaches are coming from her place (HAH! like that’s gonna happen).

- Bait stations

- Borax powder

- Diatomaceous earth powder

How did each work? The hardcore pesticides tended to work for about a month before I had to reapply… Inconvenient and dangerous, no bueno. Sealing cracks, keeping my place spotless, and bleach in the water helped a bit, but the problem still existed. And of course, the neighbor is still a slob. So pretty much, all of those methods were ineffective.

The only thing I have found that worked, and it might be quite shocking, was a combination of borax powder, diatomaceous earth powder, and bait stations. Granted my place is sealed up now and I still keep it clean, but spreading around a 2 : 1 : 0.5 mixture of DE powder + borax + sugar or flower around the edges and under the sinks and counters of my apartment worked like a charm. The bait stations took about a month to work, but at this point my place is almost completely bug free, even the house centipedes are gone.

The surprising part is that the method I found that worked the best is actually the safest one. Although borax acts as a poison, isn’t very toxic... but I wouldn’t lay it out if you have children or pets running around. The bait stations could be pretty bad news if your dog or kid decides to eat one.

If you want a completely nontoxic, cheap, and VERY effective method of killing roaches, get a 5 lb bag of DE powder at Lowes (~$10) and some flower, sugar, or cocoa powder(or any other cheap source of carbohydrates) and mix them with 3:1 or even 2:1 DE to carb source ratio.

The reason why this is effective is pretty easy to understand. Diatomaceous earth is composed of microscopic fossils of plankton called diatoms that have RAZOR SHARP edges on their shells. Roaches like to eat carbohydrates. When you put the two together, the roaches come in to eat the carbohydrate source of your choice and get covered in the DE powder while doing so. The razor sharp diatoms get into the joints of the roaches’ waxy exoskeletons and slice them to pieces. The roaches typically die of dehydration within 24 hours.

The only real concern with DE powder is breathing in large amounts of it. It will dry out your nasal passages (it is highly absorbent) and it turns into a thick paste when it comes in contact with wet mucous membranes . The paste that is formed could cause some nasal and lung congestion, but in the long run your body will get rid of it. No worries about cancer and ending up in the hospital with this stuff.

Take that, you roach sums a bitches.

For reals yo, those things are creepy as shit. The mixture wasn't supposed to kill them because centipedes don't eat carbs, they eat insects. I guess they died because they walked through the powder.

Oh man! Awesome. Thank you thank you. I've been starting to see roaches and before I bomb the fuck out of my place I will try this.

Before this I had a problem with rats. Safest solution was the only one that worked in that case too, I got a cat. Isn't she cuuute? hehehe

my cats are reasonably effective against the mice, the at least keep the
populations down outside, as for roaches, I moved to a new place once
from a place that was infested with roaches, I set off about a dozen
foggers in the truck with the furniture before I started unloading, I've
never had a roach since

Yay for cats! Mine actually just keeps the rats away with her smell I think, as there are more, safer, catless units in my building for them to patrol.

Before we had a cat my bf and I actually killed one rat and it was probably the worst thing to do at 4am, ever. The damn thing didn't die from the trap (it was huuuge), and so we tried to trap it under a bucket, but ended up just cutting its head off with the bucket by accident.

Pool of stinking blood 3 feet wide on kitchen floor.

Fucking vermin.

Like I posted in Coasters roach thread, heres how you make a lethal roach bait that doesnt degrade over time like most pesticides tend to do:

If you want something extra for your roaches, get borax or boric acid, 1 heaping teaspoon in a pint of water with 10 lumps of sugar in it, then use this liquid to soak cotton balls, toilet paper, kitchen roll or small pieces of corrugated cardboard in it.

Let this dry and spread out small bits of it in places where roaches like to eat.

They'll eat it, get borate poisoning and die. There is no resistance against borate as it works by dehydration.

Whatever you do to exterminate them, add this to your measures. Works against ants too.

Boric acid and borax are dirt cheap, used as cleaning products you can expect to pay $2 for half a pound of either which is way more than enough for your purposes.

Its not too toxic for us humans, but it is to roaches.
