just cut the top off and put on foil cover with glass but do this on the edge of a table so the glass is hanging of a little to let air in or if you got allot put in  a box

thanks feel and anonjon for the help. Feel,do i fold tinfoil over the print after im done, and how do i store these?

Heres some pics from my first grow. Sadly, i didnt take any documentation down as far as weight per flush and such. These pics span between 4 flushes.




i had two bins side by side, you can just make out the other one in the first pic. They're were some pretty impressive mushrooms in these batches. i was really happy with PF tek :]

my 1st syringe came from them... actually i got like 5 from them.

i should have crunched that cash up, jumped in my car, got on the freeway, opened the window and thrown it out.

it would have done more for me.

mini-UPDATE.

got the syringes in the mail today. all 6 of them, labeled, but the needles dont come connected. No biggie, makes sense I guess, even though i dont like the thought of having to figure out that enigma inside my glovebox while my hands are shaking xD

Im going shopping tommorow for some jars/alcohol/lysol. 6 syringes, x3 twelve packs of 1 pint jars, a whole weekend of birdseed/pressure cooking. Git'r'Done :laugh:

Ill put up some pics of them after they're knocked up. peace.

(btw, ordered Jars October 6th, got them October 15th. 9 days, not bad at all. now we need to see if they have spores in 'em.)

QUESTION :

So i bought my 36 jars, polyfill, tyvek, alcohol, coffee filters, tin foil, birdseed and all that jazz to get this show on the road.

My PC only hold 6 jars at a time, so im just doing it slow and steady. The first batch of WBS is in a pot right now soaking up overnight.

HERES THE PROBLEM :

Ive been reading a lot about sunflower seeds and there good/bad traits. My WBS mixture, by some CRUEL twist of fate, is literally almost entirely made of Sunflowers...

Am i f***ed? Should i toss this before i stick 'em with the syringe and get some other stuff?

You could use it as is, or you could sift out the floating sunflower seeds.

Personally I would use that bag for the birds and get something else though.

Try the health food store for some whole grain rye or wheat. Or if you can't find that, get some cheap popcorn. I'm not a fan of wild bird seed. To me it seems harder to get the moisture content perfect. Also I'd rather spend a little extra money than have to rinse out the birdseed several times. I know some people swear by it, but if you can't find some better birdseed or whole grains, just get some popcorn. It works great.

That seems like a good idea. I thought working with WBS would be easy as pie, but its been really killing me these past few days. Listen to these... roadblocks.

first of all, when i let it sit in a pot of water for about 16 hours, i opened up the lid and it looked EXACTLY the same. Not at all rusty like in Doc's pics. Left it for about 8 more hours, came back, same thing. Decided i couldnt let it rot more and started anyways.

secondly, when i was simmering the seeds, none of  them really popped or anything, and i think i might have over cooked them. Simmered for about 25 minutes, and they were damn near mushy. Check em out.





Also, i didnt use polyfill, just double tyvek...

I think im going to scrap this all before i waste a syringe of B+ :[

I dont know if ill ever feel confident with this method. When i was doing pf tek, it all... looked right.

I dunno if i should buy different bird seed or what i should do differently though :[

I have 6 syringes. Im thinking ill knock up these ones with my B+ and just see what happens. If in a week or two i see mycelium, ill feel alot more confident.

If it's mushy you overcooked it and I wouldn't bother inoculating it. It will colonize slow and won't want to shake apart. You'll be cursing it as you scrape out the mycelium with a fork. You want the grains to be loose.

When simmering your WBS it isn't going to pop like popcorn, what you're looking for is a FEW grains that have split their shells.  Bring the heat up slowly to a simmer, check it frequently by lifting out a few seeds looking for cracked husks. Once a very small number of the kernals have split their husks, it's most likely safe to remove from the heat.  To be sure the seeds are at the correct moisture content at this point, try splitting a seed with your fingernail.  If you can do this, then the seeds are at the optimum moisture level.

It took me a bit of trial an error to get it right, but once you know, it's really quite easy.  Also look for WBS that is mostly millet (the small round seeds) as you won't have nearly as many floaters with that kind. 

Also you want to be sure the seeds are dry enough to pass the spoon/hand/toilet paper test(s) before loading them into your jars for PCing.  This is much easier if you strain them directly after simmering, as the heat will allow most of the outside moisture to evaporate off within a few minutes.

Are rye berries not an option?  I feel like you could be saving yourself a lot of work.

My water has never been rusty either. I'm not sure what makes it do that. It's just been mop water gray. It will actually soak up a pretty good amount with an overnight soak, but I didn't realize how much at first, because I didn't look at the soaked and unsoaked seeds side-by-side. Have you tried that? My WBS has a lot more milo (reddish) than yours appears to, but I don't think you have too much sunflower. I think the picture looks a little mushy. It will probably be okay, but probably worth it to toss it and start again.

If you're intent on using wbs, here's another tek. This guy doesn't even simmer. He soaks, drains, and pc's.

Doc's tek looks better to me tho. Maybe simmer on lower temperature and for only 20 min next time.

Can you guys direct me towards some non-WBS methods? I spent so long studying bird seed that the thought of digging into something else is boggling.

I'm getting really impatient (i know i know, bad news) to start growing again. I wont rush into anything, but i think im going to use the birdseed i have now, cook it for less time (ten minutes this time) and let it drain for alot longer (like overnight).

Instead of polyfill, im using double tyvek. I do have polyfill, but on all 36 jars theres two syring-sized holes rather than one big one, polyfill stuffed there isnt an option. I was thinking after i knocked them up through those holes, i'd pack polyfill into the coffee filter and rubber band those down.

ill give you guys updates. I figure ill know if it works in about a week or two (to see white dots) and if it doesnt ill scrap birdseed altogether.

All grains are the same, you prep them the same way. Adjust times based on the size and texture of the grains.
Soak, simmer, strain. :thumbup:

Yeah, I think you're over-complicating this.

Just go out and get some whole grain rye and some popcorn and try em out and see what you think.

popcorn is an option!?

you prepare popcorn kernals the same way? Simmer them until a few crack?

id rather use that over wbs any day.
