Beautiful pics nice finds! next time though, maybe use scissors so you dont rip out all that mycillium and only pick ones that have opened up all the way to release the spore.

I had a feeling some might take issue.

Scissors next time, then.

How does ripping out the stem bases affect the mycelial mat...??  I've heard conflicting reports.

I'm selfish for wanting the added weight.

As for letting the caps mature...  Yes.  Plenty out there maturing as we speak.  Early still.

Sorry if I offended your mush hunting sensibilities.  My bad.

I think it depends on the habitat they are in, substrate.

I personally dont use scissors, there is a vast network of myc underground, not just a few strands, so to pull a little bit up wont hurt in my opinion.

When picking in wood chips one can easily pull up tons of mycelium on accident, but if you pick actives that are in lawns then just gently lean the fruit body over and they will usually snap at the soil level, or just use your fingernails if you got them.

Right.  The Azure mycelium is absolutely vigorous IMO.

I was under the impression that leaving a rotting stem base invites infection/contamination from competing organisms.  I dunno.

Ive always wondered this myself but I do know in the sandy areas myc comes out very easily and you tend to pull out a bunch, if you have a big glob at the end then probably should have cut them. I too have been curious about the infection aspect but it seems like most wood lovers you should cut. Grassy areas have harder soil so you dont bring out a bunch with you, in the sand the myc is spotty.

The stem bases do not rot, they turn back into mushroom mycelium.

If you do pick the stem bases, make sure to plant them as spawn in fresh wood chip beds.

If you aren't going to plant the stem bases, cut/pinch the stems so you don't pull up all the colonized material from the patch.

If anyone gets angry with you for picking the stem bases, just tell them that you meant to do it so you could start new patches.
