Considering the Beatles came before the Doors and helped create a scene for them to thrive it that helps my argument.

Johnny Cash nor Coltrane became pop music after the Beatles.
In fact some would argue the Beatles helped destroy jazz's popularity. Pop music is much easier to grab onto than jazz, and the Beatles made some of the poppiest music ever when they first came about.

Johnny Cash isn't pop music.

All three sold less albums than the Beatles.

Johnny Cash's influence is much smaller on current pop than the Beatles.

Nirvana didn't have nearly the same influence on pop music that the Beatles did. I'm not denying their enormous influence though.

In fact, I'm not even sure your "counterpoint" makes any sense.

You could at least bring up Michael Jackson or boy bands that sold more record than the Beatles.

Edit: Suimush: Again I'll state that I never, in this thread, said the Beatles mad bad music.

You have a very fundamental misunderstanding of music.  There has always been pop music.  In jazz 90% of jazz was 'pop'.  In classical 90% of it was pop, only a few artists were experimental at all.  Your point I guess is that the beatles created catchy pop music?  Welcome to all of human musical history.  However they definitely were an experimental pop band, honestly moreso in my opinion than the so called hipster friendly bands like the Velvet Underground etc..

And furthermore rock is inherently a simple type of music   There are people who create complex music like Zappa and so forth but its a very small percentage.  I listen to orchestral music when I need something more complex, rock is certainly not that.  I mean it was based off blues which is some of the most musically simple music in the past century

Where did I say any of those things?

For the however manyith time, I never said the Beatles mad bad music. So what are you trying to say? I'm not trolling, and I don't completely side with this argument. If you actually read my posts you'd understand that. I'm actually one of the bigger proponents of pop music, especially for someone who doesn't listen to much of it. I'd rather our pop music was different, but I see and respect the purpose/use of the music.

Chespirito: I don't mean to imply that pop started with Beatles. Simply pop as we know it now. I think that can be inferred since my argument is about how the Beatles ruined music by creating the pop scene that we have now. It's a pretty undeniable fact, yet tons and tons of people who like the Beatles (especially younger people who are active in various music scenes for whatever reason) hate the state of pop music today.

I understand they put out plenty of work that wasn't pop, but to act like they didn't make arguably the best and most influential pop music ever is a little ridiculous.

OP: I really didn't intend to derail your thread like this. My apologies.

why don't you just not post in these types of threads, obviously you're allowed your opinion. but no need to antogonize people.

i mean, music is subjective, just because you say a band is crap, doesn't make it so.

I dont know what you mean here.  There was rock n roll pop music before the Beatles, hell Elvis was fucking huge.  There was pop during the Beatles like the Monkees etc..  Honestly Im not really sure how to respond to your points.  The beatles were an avant-garde band later in their life.  They were popular because they made excellent music.  If you are referring to their first few years before Rubber Soul?  Then yea they were a straight pop band, but I just dont see it as anything new...  I feel like you are glossing over the history of pop music and blaming everything on the beatles.  The beatles are not like todays pop because they were a real band, they played in trashy bars around Britain and Europe and were signed eventually.  They evolved into a very strange rock band   Modern pop music started in the 80's in regards to the corporate takeover of popular music

I usually say they suck to ruffle feathers.
I intentionally didn't say that here because I didn't want to antagonize anyone (and you are now the only person in this thread who is defending the quality of the Beatles' music.) I have also repeatedly pointed it.

I've never been owned on this matter since Chespirito is one of the few people that have ever actually addressed the argument with any sense beyond "LOL The Beatles were great what are you talking about?" and then putting ideas in my mouth like you have repeatedly done.

Music isn't purely subjective either. Come listen to me play trombone, then listen to a record with Curtis Fuller. I think it's an objective fact that Curtis Fuller is better than I. That really has nothing to do with this since (again) I'm not arguing the quality of the Beatles' music. I just hate when people try and dissolve musical arguments with "Music is subjective" because there are facets that just aren't.

i still don't understand your argument.

music isn't subjective? if it wasn't than why aren't we all listening to the same thing? why aren't they being composed with some sort of mathematical formula if there's this secret formula you're talking about.

My argument is the Beatles ruined music (specifically pop and popular music.)

Once again you failed to actually read my post.

I never said there was some formula to create music so I'm not sure where you pulled that from.

your arguments suck balls and don't make any sense at all. and the fact that you said that music is not subjective just shows you have no idea what you're talking about.

I would like you to directly quote where I said "Music is not subjective."

I didn't. I don't know why it's so difficult for you to read a full post to understand an argument. Don't buy the Beatles ruined pop music? Fine.

Think I'm a better musician than Curtis Fuller? You are objectively wrong.

how? that is the whole point. all you've said is that they influenced today's pop, which isn't very persuasive.
