John Lennon - 'imagine' , LSD and the government,.

How many people here belive that the US Government used the MOB to put a hit out on John Lennon? I belive this strongly and believe that his song 'Imagine' had a lot to do with it.
As many of you acid heads know, acid has the power to bring people together. During the 1970's and vietnam war many acid heads wanted peace and no war. Like how woodstock was a giant protest against the war, these acid heads believed in the same moral and understanding as John Lennon. When his song was released, it sent out a strong message., ans Lennon had millions of followers. Mainly these versus..
"imagine theres no countries, It isn't hard to do, Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too. Imagine all the people living life in peace.." Then he goes on to say.,
"you may say Ima dreamer, But IM NOT THE ONLY ONE., I HOPE SOME DAY YOU'LL JOIN US., and the world will be as one"
I jes think its so funny how many people know this song, but dont pick-up on the message he is sending. The message he is sending is not only a message of peace, but i belive the Government saw this as an Anarchy statment and was a very strong message. And during the Vietnam War, it just wasn't acceptable. I believe that acid is given a bad name by the government because of the ability to bring people together, the government is afraid of another uprising like during the 1970's. This is why Acid is rumored to stick in your spinal cord (which is false) and is to discourage people from using it.
Im sure many people will agree with me when i say that Acid is truley the wounder drug. Many of its users may come to realize the meaning of life and feel as if they are living life to the fullest. I just hope that one day everybody will get to try it, for the experince. its something that you will not soon forget.

I think Courtney Love killed John Lennon.

Kinda hard to argue with the common sense of a message of Love...
As for the rest of what you said, I mean a healthy small dose of paranoia can't hurt anyone but watch how deep into that muddy water you wade..

Yes, but by the time that song came out, it wasn't exactly a revolutionary idea. I don't think the US government felt all that threatened by it.

The US government definitely harrassed John Lennon a lot more than was warranted (based on his drugs charges, which put his citizenship in dispute in the first place), almost certainly due to political motives. I don't think the song "Imagine" had too much to do with it, though. It tied in with his political activism, but the specific song isn't the reason the US government didn't want Lennon in the country. "John Sinclair" and "Give Peace a Chance" were a couple of his protest songs that had more of an immediate impact (John Sinclair actually being released from prison after a protest at which John Lennon played the song), not that "Imagine" isn't great.
Maybe the fact that he openly spoke out in favour of psychedelics had something to do with it, as well, especially since he always made a point of the fact that he had hundreds of acid trips but no flashbacks and had never met anyone who had had a flashback.
Whether or not the government had anything to do with Lennon's death, though... Hmmm. They killed him in 1980 when his influence was fading and political activism was pretty insignificant. A large number of 1960s political activists died in mysterious circumstances in the 1970s and 1980s, but it just seems a lot more believable that a nutcase fan did it than the idea that the US Government would assassinate a 40 year old Lennon. If Charles Manson could take "Helter Skelter" to be a song about upcoming race war, then it's not that unlikely that Mark David Chapman would hear voices telling him to kill his idol. Apparently he was also a pretty strong Christian, despite his drug use and was angry with Lennon over the "bigger than Jesus" comment. I just can't see a conspiracy theory in all this.

For serious, hippies were singing about love before that song came out. I doubt the government would spend their time killing Lennon over it, especially knowing what happens to martyred celebrities: crap like this.

And I don't think LSD has the world-changing, nation-destroying power you describe. I think its fabled widespread use in the 1960s was a side-effect of the emerging philosophies at the time, not a cause. The US government demonized it to discredit the anti-war movement, because its use was commonly associated with the hippy stereotype.

yeah I think the last estimate I heard was that in 1967 just over a million people had tried it. considering the population of the US at that time was around 200,000 I'd guess, that's only .5% of the population, which is minimal compared to how many had probably smoked pot.
