Airplane ticket prices.........WTF
    #11200469 -

I was doing some searching on a cheap flight outta this state for a weekend trip. I used to get one way fights out of Little Rock to St Louis for $30-50 back in the late 80's. So I figured I could do something like that.

I start looking and you can't fly straight to St Louis from LR anymore, you gotta go to Memphis, Dallas or (of all places) Atlanta and then on to St Louis.

Prices were between $115-160 for a single round trip ticket. Doable but still kinda pricey. So I figure that a one way flight to either Dallas or Atlanta would be cheaper. Dallas was about $100 for a RT ticket.

But Atlanta was $480 for a non stop round trip flight :shocked2:
there were other flights that required going to Dallas first that were cheaper $150-200

I could fly to Atlanta then on to St Louis for $130

But to fly JUST to Atlanta is almost $500

Uhhh... if you're gonna fly and you want a good price, book at least a month in advance. And never expect to pay less than $100. And if you're flying in a busy travel day (Day before Thanksgiving or Sunday after, for example)... Expect to pay 3-4 times what you usually would.

These were quotes for 3 weeks from now.

What boggles my mind is I can be in the air twice as long and only pay 1/2 as much

flying from LR to Atl then to STL I would be in the air twice as long as I would just flying from LR to ATL

but it costs 2x as much to just fly to ATL  WTF :flowstone:

It depends on the airline typically. If the airline doesn't have a lot of flights going to Atlanta it'll be more. Plus Atlanta is the busiest airport in the nation, I'm sure it costs a premium just to fly into there.

Compare the increase over the twenty years since you last flew to the prices of maybe beer, gas, cigarettes etc and you'll realize that flying is cheaper than it used to be.      There is no WTF factor here.

I think its because the airlines are focused all on the business traveler who doesn't pay for their tickets with their OWN $ but wants the most direct flights.  Thus a direct flight is 500 bucks yet for the roundabout ways the airlines can only get so much.

Something like that. Same reason why a lot of hotels are cheaper on weekends than during the week.

I hate the airlines - they suckle at my tax dollar teat yet treat me with utter contempt every time I fly.  I just flew to and from DC last week on US  - they served ZERO food and were charging 6 bucks for a small can of Pringles.

I took a friend to the airport this morning and it brought back a lotta memories.
I warned him about how expensive shit is on an airplane or airport.
This was his first time flying, so he was a bit nervous.

The discrepancy in the price is strange to me
Several (~4) of the flights from LIT to STL went through ATL
but when I searched for tickets to ATL
most went through Dallas and only one was non stop :crazy2:

Go look on Southwest.

I believe they are the only airline that isn't searched by the "mass searchers" (expedia, travelocity etc.).

They also have direct flights from St. louis to little rock for as little as $49 one-way.

You're welcome.

Southwest is an awesome company, they run a ton of specials and have good service.

Unfortunately like the name implies they only fly in the southwest, which means getting a ticket to GA is probably unlikely through that airline.

Have you noticed that gas prices have also skyrocketed since the late 80's and the dollar is in the shitter in general?

They do have somewhat limited coverage, but when you can find them, its awesome.

I've flown Southwest constantly throughout the northeast.

Yes it seems that they have started to spread their service out into the rest of the country. I used to fly on them a lot when I was traveling between Denver and Albuquerque, because they had a $49 round trip special back in the '90s. I'm glad to see that Southwest is becoming successful enough to be a national carrier, because God knows that American, United and those other assholes just don't care about service at all anymore.

I really wasn't trying to go anywhere
and I wasn't trying to compare 80's prices to todays prices

I was just commenting on the fact
that I could fly to ATL and STL cheaper
than I could only fly to ATL
