What do you guys think about quitting job and traveling for 3 months?
    #11147198 -

I'm thinking about it. Either get one of those white vans and travel America or go backpack through Argentina and South America. I'm done with working.

If I didn't have bills that would just pile up while I was gone I would do it in a heartbeat.

Depends on the person. I have a romantic attachment to that idea but I also happen to love my job and get fulfilment out of it.

I quit my job and back packed through southeast Asia last summer for 2 months.  It was amazing and it only cost me $2500 including the plane ticket.  With out the ticket I only spent $1800, in two months!  That's better than in America.

Many people are trapped by that.
It is essential to get rid of apartment/phone/cable/internet BEFORE leaving.

I think it's easy to meet people. Just stay at a few hostels. Go out to a few bars. I'm more worried about getting robbed or kidnapped in south america. I'm sure it gets lonely too.

Well, I can't go to school during the summer cause my payment plan doesn't pay for summer sessions and I had just been fired, although I was going to quit the job for the trip to Thailand that my sister had been planning.

I went because my sister had gone several times before and spoke so highly of the experiences that I decided to tag along with her on her next trip.

If you don't have a family  (kids) do it RIGHT NOW!. Seriously. There will ALWAYS be time to settle down and work. BUT the ability to just drop everything and travel will not always be around (or at least it gets alot more complicated) .

DO IT

NOW

NOW

This is your life ...live it. You will only regret NOT doing something like this.

We have not even to risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time have gone before us — the labyrinth is thoroughly known. We have only to follow the thread of the hero path, and where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god; where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves; where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence. And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.

i'm about 2 months into my european travels.  approximately 10 more to go.  IF i can stretch my money out that far.  WWOOFing has absolutely positively let me really stretch my buck.  i'm on such an insanely tight budget that i can't even afford a hostel each night i travel ($6,800 in the bank right now).  when i hit the road in a couple of months, i'm going to try to couchsurf, though my initial attempt was unsuccessful.  i'm also staying with as many people i know as possible.  i expect i'll end up sleeping in some uncomfortable places, but i can handle that.  and when my money nearly runs out, i plan to start WWOOFing on another farm again, hopefully early next summer.

so i say go for it.  absolutely go for it.  if your current job isn't a career, then you've got nothing to lose.  sure, maybe you'll go in a bit of debt, but it'll be an experience you wouldn't trade for the world (assuming you're that kind of person).  one of my biggest fears was stagnating: getting stuck into a rut, without ever having seized the opportunity to travel while my obligations are limited.  so i dove in head first.  worse comes to worst, i go home a few months earlier than intended.  but i still have the experience.

and maybe you should consider looking into WWOOF.  you have to pay for each country subscription, but it'll let you get a more intimate look at the culture of that specific country than your average traveler would be afforded.

I've heard of WWOOF.  Is it hard labor, or what?

depends on the farm; every farm is different.  the one i'm working on isn't all that bad.  5-8 hrs a day, 5 days a week.  and i basically do whatever odd jobs they need done, usually in the form of assisting a farm worker.  i did a lot of mowing, harvesting of fruits, a bit of caring for animals, some work on some fences, etc.  it's really not bad at all.  i like working hard and i like getting dirty.  i don't feel fulfilled in the shower unless the water running off me is completely discolored.

if you have a specific country or region in mind, just go to www.wwoof.org and find that country, then go through its website.  generally they have some example farms for you to look at.  so you'll see what sort of farming to expect, what sort of options there are, etc.  i was actually quite lucky and i didn't even realize it.  but i got onto the very first farm i emailed.  since i've been here, they've literally gotten over a hundred requests from other WWOOFers.  so if you ever plan on doing it, make sure you contact them in advance, and make yourself sound as appealing as possible.  i found out later that it was the email i had written that got me the position.

nice TRB.... i've done a few days woofing in spain this summer along with my girl... it was an experience for sure but i'll never go to woof again on that farm!
that place could have been a small haven but it instead there was too much going on and nothing done right. make sure you always have different options, don't get stuck on one farm!!!

where you at anywaY? where are you heading?>

i'm in the czech republic.  southeast, right next to slovakia.  i've got a pretty good thing going on this farm, and given my extremely limited funds i'm going to take advantage of it.  after this farm, it's just general traveling throughout europe, however i can swing it.  late november/early december i'm going to be taking a couple week break from this farm to visit a friend in france, then up to germany to hang out with apolly and chairman meow.  then back to the farm for probably another month.

after that, probably back up to germany to hang out with another shroomerite.  maybe try to see if i can find a couch to surf on after that.  not really sure where i'm gonna be jan-feb.  that's still completely open for me.  maybe hit up a buddy staying in barcelona. i'd love to be able to see italy and greece, but i'm not sure if i'll be able to swing it.  depends on how adept i get at hitchhiking i guess.  i simply can't afford to take a train everywhere.  my best bud's ex girlfriend said she has a friend in Rome who would probably let me crash on her couch, but that was before they broke up, so i'm not sure where that offer stands now.

come late march/early april, my best bud is gonna be in france for a wedding, and we've got a mutual friend going to oxford grad school, so we'll probably go hang out with him for a couple weeks.  and i met a british dude i hung out with for a while from gloucestershire who said i could crash on his couch in late may for the cheese rolling festival - i really want to participate, but i don't have health insurance, so we'll see.

that was pretty detailed, sorry.  but that's about as much as i have.  a lot of it is still up in the air.  a lot of back and forth traveling it seems, so at some time before i head back out on the road i'm gonna have to actually get a route set and a rough itinerary.  btw, any european shroomerites up for hosting a couch-surfer, i'd be totally respectful and appreciative.  i'll probably have some jwh-018 to share as well.

wish i could tell you yes, would be cool to meet up if you're in barcelona some day, but unfortunatly i live in a small apartment and my girl and me have had enough of hosting people here... it's just too much sometimes! but yeah if you're ever across these parts make sure you leave a pm or something!

sounds nice... i wish i could join you.
also if you're ever in riga latvia or palermo italy or berlin or rotterdam or madrid and you find your self with no plan on the first friday of the month make sure you check out www.cue-ifyouneed.org for a very fun free event!!! (we're also doing here in Barcelona)

check it out!

for the OP... what kind of job are you thinking to drop, how old are you?
