Try the Haight Ashbury district. It's located just below the panhandle of Golden Gate Park. It has a history which dates all the way back to the sixties, and I know it was still a real easy place to score acid in the eighties.

Also the Pacific Garden Mall in Santa Cruz (1 hour to the south) used to also be really good.
