Anyone own a netbook? I have a question.
    #11017820 -

I'm thinking about getting a netbook for taking notes in classes and, well, just browsing the net in bed or on the couch and shit like that. The one I have in mind is the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE.

I know it's a great computer but I have one worry: is it hard to type on a keyboard that small? I have retardedly large hands, and if I'm not going to be able to type on it I see no point in getting it.

Think it'll work or should I just stick with regular laptops?

I have one, and the keyboard isn't too small, at all. My only point is that they are rather delicate---like if you accidentally step on one it could crack the screen rather badly, unlike the hardier class of big strong laptops. But other then that they seem to be great.

I just use my regular laptop for browsing on the couch or in bed.

I guess if you only had a desktop computer it'd be worth it, but if you already have a laptop it seems like a waste.

i own a MSI Wind U100. Its a sweet little device and we use it a lot. We have a full-fledged desktop already, so it is used as a secondary netsurfing device around the house. We also watch movies on it sitting out back. We have it loaded with a selection of music from the main computer so we can have a good mix on hand if we're cruising, and we are going to load a bunch of "best of" photos so we can easily show off stuff we do to family & friends when we travel with it.

I have found that i can type alright using the main letters, but when I reach for the smaller symbol keys surrounding the right SHIFT key, I make mistakes or have to break my concentration and do the hunt & peck for the one I want. Sausage fingers might not enjoy.

It came with Windows XP pre-installed, but I quickly installed Ubuntu on a new partition. I run Ubuntu NetBook Remix. It definitely takes some tinkering  and learning, but I am enjoying getting to know linux and use non microsoft OSs. I also firmly believe that the next few years will see some great strides in lightweight fast OSs built for low-powered web surfing devices. I will admit here to be being a pro-Mac dude, and there are hacks out there to get OS X to run on a variety of netbooks.

I am using the netbook right now actually, while my wife using the imac. We are nerds.

gumby, I noticed you said you have semi large hands. I would recommend not getting the netbook. The one you suggested is (i believe) 90% the size of a normal keypad. That is not bad for a netbook but with any extended duration of typing, your fingers will be cramped.
Another thing to take note of is the extremely weak ATOM processor you will be getting. I'd advise you to go without the netbook for a few months- then the newer (faster) processor will be out & you will be able to do a lot more with the computer.

I have an Asus EeePC 1000HA (1.6ghz processor, 2gb ddr2 ram, 160gb hdd, ralink a/b/g/n wifi).

When I initially got it the keyboard was quite weird to use, but within a week or so it was no longer an issue.

In retrospect, that little eeepc was easily the best thing I've invested in in the last couple of years. At first I thought I'd blown a load of cash on something I'd never use, but its easily one of my favourite things I own.

I dual boot mine with xp & ubuntu, it came with some really gay assed hacked up linux which was practically unusable.

My dad uses one and I find it impossible to type on. I barely ever use it though, I'm sure you get used to it with frequent use.

i've got one of the eee's. make sure you check out the keyboard in the store before you buy it. the main complaint i have with mine isn't the key size, but the layout. the only shift key is on the right side, and the enter/backspace keys are the same size as normal letters. i'm sure i have smaller hands than you tho.

btw check out the new dell netbooks. they are the same price, but come with the option for 3g and are designed better imo. thinner, normal keyboard, high quality design.

OH YEAH, one other thing. make sure you get the model with the touchpad buttons on he bottom, like normal. the eee i have has the buttons positioned to the right and left of the touchpad to conserve space, but it makes it impossible to hit the right click with your thumb while you are moving the mouse. HUGE design oversight.

i've got an acer aspire one A150L.  it was a slightly older model when i got it, so i was able to get it brand new for only $210 shipped.  N270 1.6gHz, 1g RAM, 120g hdd, 8.9" screen (i didn't want 10" - too big) and some neat little features including 2 card-readers, 3 usb, great integrated wifi.

the keyboard is, like you've already read, smaller, yes.  but i have fat hands with huge palms, and i've been able to get quite used to it.  i've got the mouse buttons on either side, like JT was talking about. but i don't mind it, as i just tap the touchpad for my mouseclick.  it has that button placement for size reduction purposes.  i'm traveling, so its tiny size is absolutely perfect.

i loaded it with a version of ubuntu netbook remix tailored specifically for the aspire one, called Linux4One, and i'm really digging it.  really is an incredibly convenient little device.

to be honest man, if you have large hands it WILL be a pain in the ass to type on  a netbook.  It annoyed me too much when i had one just the whole size of it in general i sold it to get a normal size laptop.

The only 2 reasons I see to get a netbook are...
1. Small size for travel or convienence.
2. Cheap / That's all you have money for.

If you don't NEED a tiny computer for traveling and you've got money to spend, just get a normal laptop.

Wow, I didn't know they allowed class notes to be taken via computer.  I think I'd kill someone if I had to listen to "clickety-clack" as they typed during an hour or so lecture.

Multiply that by a couple hundred kids and that has to be a new form of torture.

Use a pen.

I've probably sat through more lectures and schooling than most here.

It was just a long time ago.

I never used a laptop for notes, but I never took many notes in the first place. A lot of my class-mates used their laptops for notes though, it would be a hell of a lot easier to type out 3 pages of notes rather than hand-write 3 pages of notes.

Hey Gumby, I own an EEE PC 1000H, and love it! I have fairly big fingers, I'm 6"2 and weigh 175 pounds, and I have no problem.

The keyboard on the 10 inch models are 92% the size of a full-sized keyboard, you should be fine!
