Oh no, that would open me up to all kinds of charges of interfering with an investigation and whatnot. Definitely not. Never. Let that be on the permanent record. But if the info somehow got leaked through an anonymous remailer, I could hardly be held accountable.

First of all MAC addresses are easily spoofed so that doesn't prove anything, second of all we have no way of collecting them without using Java applets (it was considered for puppet tracking purposes, and abandoned as impractical.)

But you guys seem to think the feds come and ask permission before seizing a server. Not so. I'd find out about it the same way as everyone else, when the site went offline. I might receive a courtesy notice from our host, but I really have no idea.

Basically it depends on the circumstances. I have no police record and I'm not engaged in any illicit activity. So if I have to sit in county jail for a week in contempt of court for keeping my mouth shut, it's a no brainer. But if they're going to slap me with felony charges, seize all my assets, throw me in prison and make my life miserable until I give up the info, look, I don't like you guys that much. That's why we provide all these privacy tools, so you can protect your own identity. I'm not gonna be Bubba's bitch because you were too lazy to learn to use a proxy.

Yeah, but -- but that'd be hard and dangerous, and... cops might actually get hurt or off their donut schedule! (Also, Preznit Bush said Bin Laden was yesterday's news, Saddam was WAY trendier.)

That statement is 100% untrue.


it would take a court order to pry any information from the
hands of the administration, usually if it's to the point where they're
issuing subpoenas for the servers/logs then it's too late for whom ever
they intend to arrest and they'll likely already have access to that
persons computer... in the 11 years this board has been up and running
there's never been an arrest attributed to the shroomery and there's
never been a request by law enforcement for those records

so while it stands that his is incorrect about what they can and cannot
do, he's correct in his assumption that your information is safe unless
you're posting it all over the internet, the shroomery will not give it out

there's a lot of people that post their personal info, I've seen several
drivers licenses posted and know that they were the actual users license

from slightly more covert means your IP can be obtained by pictures that
are hot linked from other sites, for instance I can set up a server to
host images or even pages in order to collect IPs, I'd have to sift
through those IPs to find one in an area I'm looking in but then narrowing
it down as we have a few dozen posters that are active in my area which
would have me checking times of posters posts against the images views,
I'm sure there's a dozen other ways but that one is pretty simple, even
a cop could do it

there's a thread in Security & Safety regarding the protection of your
info, the use of proxies, etc, most of us advise everyone to make use of
that information and use TOR or something like Steganos Internet Anonym VPN

I had a suspected narc pm me a few months ago
0 posts and had just registered

Left me an email and told me to email him and not pm him through this site.

I ignored it and 5 minutes later he pm'ed me again with a corrected email address

I was like, wtf scrub
