believe it or no - there *are* advantages to being raised in poverty

since as far back as I can remember my old man had always told me that if I ever wanted to goto college - I'd have to pay for it myself

so I took my schooling very seriously growing up...cause I knew damn well that I'd never be able to pay for college on my own accord, and that I'd have NO other choice then to get a scholarship if I wanted to ever get a degree so that I wouldn't have to be stuck doing grunt work / manual labor for the rest of my life

so I always managed to stay way ahead of the game...cause in my mind - my entire future was at stake here

he also always told me that I better damn well plan on getting a job at sixteen, an saving up for a place of my own (not to mention all the dishes / furniture / whatever other necessities I would most certainly 'need' when that time came) cause the day I turned eighteen - my ass was being kicked to the curb...whether I had a place to go or not

and you better believe that I did exactly that too...cause in my mind - I knew he wasn't bullshitting either

he often times taught me that if I wanted to eat - I better go work for my food

and needless to say - I've never starved

that having a lot of toys don't mean dick if you can't keep a roof over your head to begin with

and that's never been the case

that you can't start a family of your own unless you can provide for one to begin with

which is certainly true

which is why I 'try' to begin with

when you know that your life most definitely will suck UNLESS you do something to change it:

I firmly believe you can learn the same values without being raised in poverty.

In fact, I might even suggest that poverty has little to do with it.

I feel as though I've learned similar values coming from a supportive (both financially and emotionally), middle class family.

Lazy poor parents make kids with higher success drive.

Rich "ahead of the game" parents often have lazy kids who end up being poor.

It is a cycle until someone makes a conscious decision to break it and either:
A) a wealthy born kid voluntarily cuts themselves off from parents
B) a wealthy parent decide to give that kid NOTHING even though they are wealthy

A man raised in poverty attains success due to his hardscrabble work ethic, while his kid becomes a spoiled little shit, grows up to become impoverished and raises a kid that learns a strong work ethic and grows up to be successful and raises a spoiled little shit with no work ethic.

This is so fucking true man
I have personally seen this in action

Kids that grow up w/out any chores/responsibilities
grow up to be irresponsible adults

Poverty has a lot to do with this mindset because people in poverty
don't have the luxury of dishwashers and a TV in every room

I grew up poor and have stayed at or below the poverty line most of my life
My kid had chores, didn't have a TV or computer in her room, no cell phone either
She knew early on that if she wanted these things she would have to work for them

I know of very few middle class people who make their kids
do the dishes or mow the yard or take out the trash
Kids today have an overblown sense of entitlement
that they got by not having any responsibilities

yes and no

my mother was one of those types that (unfortunately) grew up in shelters an shit...so she always had the getup-n-go attitude that she tried to instill in the lot of us because she knew how important it was for us not to ever have to rely on anyone else

my step-father, however, didn't like to work / was really bad with money / had this real nasty habit of buying shit for himself before taking care of the bills an shit...and he generally seemed to like to pawn the household chores an crap off onto us kids so that he wouldn't have to do squat for himself (it was sad really)

so I kinda saw two very different ways of preaching the same damn message
