That's a common misconception. History is actually one of the most difficult liberal arts majors, which is why ivy league law schools (where sotomayor went) farm history majors like crazy. History teaches systematic thinking, philosophy, and excellent writing skills, as well as intensive research training.

I wouldn't expect you to know that though, coaster. What did you major in, stringing together beads while you're high on amphetamines?

She mentions her race because the conservatives are after the latino vote, which makes it hard for them to oppose a moderate latina candidate.  It's not a racial issue, it's a societal issue.  For them to vote against her would have only shown how extremist they are and that they hold values that are diametrically opposed to core values of all but the white religious right in the South.

The Latino vote is a huge block, and like it or not, a political force that politicians cater to quite a bit.
