Windows vista
    #10785024 -

After my computer started slowing down I decided to re-install vista only to realise the disc my manufacturer gave me did not contain windows at all.  I have the sticky on the bottom of the computer with the key code so I downloaded and installed a torrent copy of Vista - using my own key code thinking I would not have to pay for Windows again.

It all worked fine until all of a sudden it now pops up saying that my copy is invalid and I have to buy a new product key :kingcrankey:  Its rediculous, surely I don't have to buy a new copy everytime I want to do a re-install?

Any idea how I can stop this stupid message popping up, its making me wait 20 seconds before it lets me use the computer at all everytime I boot.

was it a non-cracked OEM vista iso?
I know you can do that with XP but I haven't tried it with vista yet.

No, you don't. Have you activated it? Press ctrl+pause and have a look if Windows reckons it needs to be activated.

Its a vista home edition I think.  It had some crack software with it which I didn't use.

Is that the same edition as what you had? Keys can be pretty specific.

But it won't recognise your licence key? Sounds like it might not be the exact same version, or something. Either way it's a pain. Are you sure your manufacturer didn't provide any copy of Windows on CD?

They don't provide the discs anymore, you need to feed ur pc like 3 blank DVD's and use the Recover Disc creator utility to make them yourself.  I go through this 10x a day when replacing hard drives.  If you didn't make one when you had the chance you need to contact the manufacturer and order a set.  (about $10).

This sounds silly to me.  If you need to do a complete reset because of a virus you would be pretty screwed as its likely the virus would continue to transmit itself by this method.

Considering that new viruses are not picked up by virus checkers for a while this seems like a bad idea.  Microsoft seem to be pretty great at bad ideas though

Particularly Vista. Maybe you should take the opportunity and upgrade to 7

I had similar problem with XP, I installed it once, and next time I reinstalled and tried to activate it I got "you registered XP key too many times, go buy new xp your key is fkd.."
But it is enough to call Microsoft and say wtf I installed this crap once and now it doesn't work.....

They will ask you to read long as hell serial number that you'll see if you take activate through the phone....

Here is where the problem is for you, this long serial does probably tell them what kind of windows it is and if it matches the key, hence they might say to you since you windows is from the net, "wtf this windows copy is flagged by us as being illegal!" or something....

But it might still be worth a try instead of buying new windows...

I'm running a illegitimate copy of vista..used the key that came with it..Worked fine on two comps. This comp needed validated so i called Microsoft and they validated it for me(free btw you don't have to buy anything)..Also i'v used the same copy of xp for like 30 reinstalls on all my home comps and they validated it every time for me.Really i don't think the guys in India really care whats up just call the provided number, tell them the numbers, say you did a reinstall and get them to validate the copy you got.Works EVERY time for me regardless of were i got the copy of windows.Just try it, worst that can happen is they say you have a fake copy of windows. But i'v never had that happen to me.

Well the idea is that you make the Recovery Discs immediately after unboxing the computer in case of future failure.  Even if you did it later when you were infected, the recovery discs are housed on a separate partition than the C: and it's write protected so the virus won't afftect it.  All the manufacturers are doing it now, I think Dell is the only one that still provides you with discs.

why i dont run windows.

it just plain sucks.

Linux is the way forward.

There are tons of keys for windows, some have been blacklisted that are known to be distrubuted as cracked coppies.

Every key doesnt work for every disc. each set of disc will only accept a certain number of keys. So, you need to find a copy that can be used with your key which is going to be difficult.

Its really stupid that pc distrubitors like pc world etc dont supply the original windows installation disc with new pcs and laptops. But instead an image of it already installed, bloated with shit and badly configured.

You've payed for your PC including windows, you should have the original disk.

I was brought up with windows, and through a shit load of use, working with, repairing pc's i get really pissed of with it. The ease for it to be hacked over the internet, the amount of secuirity software you need to stop your computer being comprised and alll the virus's.

After my debit card details got stolen and used in another part of the country that was the last straw.

Several years later and i use debian and ubuntu linux. Its free very powerfull.

There is a steep learning curve but spend enough time and you get used to it. For most peoples needs, linux would more than do good for them. And its more secure right out of the box.

Im running no firewall, virus scanners spyware software etc.

The only thing that kills my install is me messing around with it, or dodgy hardware.

I don't run any security software or antivirus programs and I don't have any problems. Then again, I don't run exe files from shady websites or email attachments. The only protection I need is a bit of common sense.

I tried linux for a while, then went back to windows. It's not worth my time mucking around with an operating system just to get it to the stage where I can do everything I can with windows. I just don't see the advantage

Just stick with Windows XP Service Pack 3 for now. Vista sucks unless your computer is built for it. I installed Windows Vista Home Premium on my home built desktop and it started eating up all the memory, being very slow and choppy, if you have any games that you play on your PC it will probably fuck them up too, even if there is a reliable vista version for the game. Overall Vista is the sucks, I am waiting for Windows 7 to come out though hopefully they will do a little bit better.

I often have thought of changing to a completely different OS. Windows just sucks in general
