Thoughts on Bullfighting...
    #10689885 -

So I would say this sport, game whatever you want to call it is argued as being a form of animal cruelty. However in Mexico its entirely not a case for animal cruelty.

I went to a bullfight in mexico in 2004 and i went purely to experience the culture why not right? and The crowd wasn't looking for nor were impressed by any maneuvers that slowed the process of killing the bull as quickly as possible. For each bull there are 3 obstacles they go through. The first involves men on padded horseback with spears cutting into the bulls neck muscle to weaken the powerhouse of the bull. The second game involves the picadors where the matador has to run around the bull bee face to face and stick these colorful batons with spears at the end into the back of the bulls neck that then dangle in the open wound. and the 3rd game involves the traditional matador with the red cloak. All of this is to weaken the bull enough so that it gives up fighting. At which point the matador is supposed to drive a long sword straight into the back of the bull into the heart. The death is supposed to be instant graceful and showing courage. It is certainly a bloodbath and is certainly horrifying at first. But i can't say i didn't have respect for the sport. There is no bull that survives a fight, they will always kill it. And they used the meat to feed the poor.

The lack of wastefulness is certainly applaudable. I also remember hearing a mexican man speak on animal planet or something and he said "you can be a bull from america raised and fattened in a factory like setting only to be tortured and killed and chopped up and die like that, OR you could be a bull in mexico dying with dignity, dying with a fight."

Of course this quote is arguable because who knows how they really treat these bulls. But i couldn't help but see their point.

I have a hard time fully siding with the idea that this is just blind animal torture and it should be stopped, even though it is and full understand how this is fucked up. But i can't deny that  I left my bullfighting experience pretty jazzed and really understood and respected it, would i go again? maybe? maybe not? would i watch it on TV? yes.

And don't get me wrong, cock fights and that sorta thing? i think is terrible and fully disagree with it. and i do see that as animal torture.

Am i a fucked up person? is this a silly double standard? am i hypocritical?

what do you think?

not a very fair fight, even when the matador loses the bull
still loses, I see no dignity in death from either method

several armed men against a bull or 2 cockerels... the bull
always loses, only one of the roosters will... those roosters
will fight naturally, to the death, it's their nature, man has
just exploited the cocks for profit

i can never understand this argument. In some cultures, honor killings are acceptable. Now, do you sit there and think "Holy shit, since when is murder okay?!" or "Well... i mean its their culture, so its alright"

I realize that there's no way to know if there are moral absolutes, but still.

I like frank and open discussion about human behavior.

I don't necessarily agree with the concept of cultural relativism.  You cannot simply justify any behavior you want by saying "it's part of their culture".  Hell, the mayans performed human sacrifices as part of their "culture".

IMO, there is something wrong about deriving enjoyment from slowly killing an animal.  I'm against it.

It is ok to like bullfighting. It is ok not to.De gustibus non disputandum. As for me--I'd rather walk my dog.

so am I, I believe humans should be treated as animals as well
though, seems that it's humane to euthanize an animal in pain
but it's illegal to do the same for a human, they have to be
allowed to die on their own

lol, good point.
i think Bull fighting would be more acceptable as a sport if the bull was killed in one painless strike, i don't really like the idea of how they prolong its death (mostly for entertainment i bet)

well the Documentary was also about how India is FUCKED up right now because Mc donalds and other company's nestled into India's economy and ecology and now there waters are corrupt and the farmers are killing themselves like 20thousand a week or something because of debts they owe and shit like that i really felt for them and this really helped me look at how fucked up everything is in the world due to America. that was the first time i ever gave a shit about India or any other country for that matter and it opened my eyes i guess

I assume that 'corrupt waters' you mean that they're terribly
polluted, that was long before McDonalds or any big industry, you
cant have people upstream fouling the water with deification and
bathing while people downstream are drinking it

no the industry's that were polluting the water came around the same time McDonald's and all the other industry's. they showed the audience how India was before these company's came and it was actually very beautiful especially compared to its current condition

Who are we to judge their culture? I mean, in this instance at least, we pretty much do the same thing.

Factory farming and the conditions it brings to millions of cows seems more torturous than the occasional death from bullfighting.

I hate to pop any noble savage bubbles, but every human culture on the face of the planet has a dark side. All of them are riddled with similar problems, some more than others.
