Oh my god... uni is :puke:

But some of those diehard sushi guys love it..
you either love it or hate it.

My sushi chef made me try it at least once every 2 months, to see if I developed a taste for it.. I almost puked every time.
And this was the top-of-the-line, super fresh uni.

It's the fucking OVARIES OF SEA URCHINS!!#!$%

Unagi is the shit. I try to make it a point to try something new each time I get sushi, but sea urchin was like weird tasting snot.

What's so :puke: about it?  The taste?  Texture?  Both?  I find a lot of times what gets me is the mouthfeel.  I'll be expecting one thing then be surprised by something completely different.  Even if it tastes good a bad texture can throw me off.  An example is apples.  A nice sweet, ripe, red apple that turns out to be really soft when I bite into it will ruin it for me.  I like a nice crispy CRUNCH when I eat an apple.

It looks, and tastes like vomit they scraped off the bottom of the ocean floor.
I think the texture of it is what really gets to me the most  :argh:
It looks like brains, it's really soft and mushy.. :puke:

Unagi on the other hand.. it :awesome:

As a current Hawaii resident, I can vouch for the amazing selection and variety of sushi out here. Even the rolls you can get from the local *supermarket* are pretty damn good! We get rolls from the store once or twice a week and go out to our local sushi bar every few weeks.

Like Shroomism said...... If I could afford, I'd live off sushi.

Next time you're out.. ask if they have any poke sauce.. poke tuna or anything like that.
Not many places do.. it's a Hawaiian style sauce.. soy sauce, sesame oil, citrus fruits (orange, whatever), green onions, ginger
It's kind of salty and sweet at the same time.. It's so fucking :drooling:  and refreshing

My sushi chef was trained in Japan, then worked in Hawaii for 8 years before moving to the mainland, so he picked up all these hawaiian style recipes.
Used to eat poke tuna chirashidon every day for lunch, tons of poke tuna piled high on a bed of seasoned sushi rice and seaweed... probably my favorite dish ever.

I DID live off sushi for a good 2 years, that was the best eating of my life. Course I was getting it free, I miss that :sad:

Eh, even if you do get TTX poisoning from fugu, as long as you are close to a hospital they can save you (usually). They have to put you on a respirator until the poison wears off because your lungs stop working. And you're usually conscious for the whole thing, you just can't move at all.

dude, the ahi poke and ahi wasabi poke out here is just amazing. i can eat that stuff like candy!

I'm the same way with apples.
I rarely buy red apples any more, generally get small yellow appples.

I have never been to a sushi bar, only had the sushi from teh store. :sad:

I'd love to try some from a good restaurant.

Every grocery store sells their own poke varieties. People get *real* serious & defensive about whose poke they buy. And they all swear that "their place" makes the best on the island. Plus, all of the fancier restaurants make home-made poke for appetizers. One place even sells a "poke martini" which is a large chilled martini glass filled with their own unique poke recipe. Fucking sweeeeet!

Most bar & grills here also serve fresh sashimi slices, ideally raw, but some places will sear them with spices. I definitely prefer mine uncooked and sliced thin. And dipped in a little bit of shoyu and wasabi paste. Imagine going down to your local sports bar, and being able to order a big plate of fresh sashimi! Heaven!

I've never liked it served it restaurants, but I've eaten it when it was pulled out of the water not 5 minutes before it was in my mouth (I watched them haul up a crane, sort through it, and start cutting up what they found).  It was tolerable.  I know the taste you're referring too, though.  I never order it.

me and my girl visit this local thai restaurant that serves sushi every month and after trying three other places in the area we discovered that this place makes the best sushi we've ever had. we usually go in and order three rolls, at least one of them with eel because unagi rolls are the shit and their eel sauce is amazing too! they serve our rolls on a big handmade wooden boat.. oh man like it was said above, if i could afford it all i would eat is sushi mmmmmhmmmmM! :sun:

The scallops they pulled up along with the Uni, however, were fucking DELICIOUS.

Goddamn now I kinda really want some sushi.

I have $34 to last me till thursday...and I don't even know who I could get to come with me.  I'd feel like such a weirdo going to a nice restaurant by myself.
