Well on the bright side, those are subbs for sure, the thicker stems and the bluing at the base are a give away. Subbs do not always grow on dung, in fact I only seem to be able to find them on newly sodded lawns. Good finds cactu!

Haha, wtf.

Those are obviously subbs. Subbs do grow in lawns and aren't just "dung loving" species. Infact, I tend to find them in lawns all the time..

I'm sure if cactu even took the time to spore print them (which there's no real point..) they'd come out JET BLACK. defiantly NOT FOES dude.

Look at the bluing on the base!?

Still killing me, No rain in Seattle for weeks, if not months without more then a light misting. The city that always rains, is getting all dried up. Not even going to bother checking my spots until after next rainfall. Maybe they'll look like those pics

However, I keep bringing it up, those gills fall below the cap margin. That is characteristic of P Foes, P Subb. Can anyone shed some light on that.

Foes and subbs both do that.  Some documents say otherwise, but they are wrong.

These are clearly subbs, due to the thick reddish stems with blue bruising.

There are a lot of threads where its hard to tell if its foes or subbs, but this isn't one of them.

Indeed, I have found that almost every "rule" to distinguishing Panaeolus cinctulus and Panaeolina foenisecii macroscopically is indefinite.
Except for the spore colour difference.

I've seen darkly coloured foes with lines going down the stem, and subbs with white stems and brown gills, so a lot of learning to identify one from the other is experience.
And when you are uncertain, just do a spore print.

Every patch of subbs I've found are in grass urban enviornments, At every single one of those locations there are subbs and foes mixed in together, I started bringing everything growing in or around the patches, and printing everything. Almost half of what I thought to be foes were indeed subbs, gills chocolate brown, below margin, stipes ivory with no wavy lines. Spore print jet black. Explanation: Nature doesn't always follow the rule book. If a person is born missing an arm, are they considered not a human being because they don't match the anatomy of a science textbook?

Ok. So why do we still have threads herethat say such macroscopic lies?

What is the unique difference genetically then? I got about 30 P. Foes today that look exactly like those, except all brown spores (i am gonna distribute these spores everywhere on the lawn in hopes to make the soil better. Just a little mycelium running test).

What is the best read on the differences. Alan, you have a good source I can read to educate myself?

Thanks, and apologies

They are useful guidelines, but not rules.

We do not censor and correct every post that is ever posted.

You should probably not take everything that you read as fact or the entire truth.  Ask questions, be critical, and look for alternatives.

They are distinctly different species, in a separate (though closely related) genus.

The genetics are different.

Check the ornamentation of the spores under a microscope at 1600x.  Or make a spore print and look at the color.

I am familiar with the brown spores of P. Foes. I will definitely look under the scope though. I need to go find a subb to compare though. Thanks to both you mods.

Look for subbs on recently sodded lawns!

They seem to grow for about 2 years, and then the foes often move in replacing the subbs.

The few I found were in a horse pasture at over 9000 ft. I'll look in the sod though. I know some good places like that.

I watch for businesses that use fertilizer in the grass by sidewalks. Half my patches are in the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street. Lush green healthy grass, gets me every time. I live in urban city, no fields, pastures, manure fertilizer, nothing like that, lawn subbs are all that is available to me right now, so thats where I look

I check fertilized grass all the time in Northern CA (colder) and never find anything but really meaty foes.  They only reliably grow on sod here.  But if you have access to pasture lands, especially piles of manure, then definitely check it out.  They love that shit.

But in Southern CA (warmer) they grew in well fertilized lawns as well as sodded lawns.  Interestingly, I checked many horse manure piles throughout the year and never saw any Panaeolus...  Weird, eh?
