You don't by any chance work in the construction industry do you?

I get the feeling you might be a roofer.

I am a contractor.  Not roofing, general and carpentry.

That is complete unethical business practice. Lets say you yourself were applying for oh i don't know another HR position, and your present employer decides to mention the fact that as their employee you were known to give "bad" references, A practice that is not only illegal, but it makes you seem like an incompetent jackass. You see, you are not only putting your job at risk, but the company as a whole because not only will you get sued, but so will your company for letting there HR worker give bad references. If anyone is going to say anything about a previous employee they one, better have WRITTEN approval from the previous employee and second, you never give a reference or employee history over the phone, you WILL get sued, and you WILL lose.

That is one of the craziest things I have ever read on the Shroomery and I have read tens of thousands of posts.  It is most certainly not illegal to give a bad reference, I have given bad references over the phone, in writing and in person and I have never ever been sued.  I didn't get sued when I challenged a previous employees unemployment claim, either.  He was fired for cause so he got COCK.  Expanded cock coated in 20 grit garnet.

Let's say I was applying for a position at another company.  I wouldn't worry about my references because I wasn't an asshole loser punk who didn't show up and was a danger to myself and others around me.  Do you think I should keep my mouth shut when I know somebody is an irresponsible threat to other workers?  That would be criminally irresponsible.

If you want a good reference, don't suck.  I've had employees boosting in porto-johns.  They get gone and if they are fucking stupid enough to list me as a reference they will NOT be hired.  And they can feel free to sue me.  I will kick their ass in court.

It comes from my near perfect knowledge of how to get almost anything done.  Also a disgustingly vast background of reading material and overall innate brilliance.  Have you seen those Dos Equis commercials with the "Most Interesting Man in the World?"  That's a pale imitation of me.  But you knew that.

I don't know how it is up North, but GC's down here usually hire superintendents that are backwoods old men "jack of all trade" types.  The superintendents usually claim to know your trade better than you, which is why they have you doing it.  Then they move from company to company jobsite to jobsite until they phase themselves and their incompetence out.

It's nice when your GC is competent.  Jobs just go so much better.

Commercial/Industrial Electrical Contractor here, and I agree.

The no-experience GC's are always trying to shift people around and end up losing productivity.

GCs up here hire sub-contractors and supervise them themselves.  At least they do in less than huge projects which have engineers and architects crawling all over the place.

Uh, not where I live.  A reference is a reference.  If you suck, your former employer can say so.  That's why we have references.

And that's exactly how it should be. No one should be sued for being a honest person, jesus christ.

Bullshit. It's not illegal to be honest. That's an urban myth.
