get tested, or get a netbook?
    #10566784 -

i have a dilemma.  :crankey:

i made a thread the other day asking about netbooks and their feasibility while i trip through europe.  well, i decided i did want one, however bills are starting to compound and i've found myself faced with the choice between getting tested (it's been a while and i've had a few unwise, unprotected encounters) and getting the netbook laptop.

the testing costs $150, the laptop $260.  now, i haven't had any sort of symptoms whatsoever that'd lead me to believe i've got an STD; i just wanted to get tested for the peace of mind.  i've had maybe 4 unprotected partners and a few more protected since i was last tested.

the netbook i feel would be invaluable on my trip because i won't have a cell phone.  so anywhere i could get free wi-fi, i'd be able to keep in contact with friends and family, contact couchsurfers for a place to crash, and stay on top of my bills via online banking.  then again i could also use internet cafes, but honestly i don't know how often i'd encounter one.

i'm really having to scrimp and save every last penny at this point, seeing as how i have like 5k less than i was expecting at this time last year.  advice?  if you were in my position, what would you do?

There has to be a free clinic where you live man. If its anything like the free clinic in my area you'll have to be cool with being the ONLY white guy there, but hell its free and they test for everything.:2cents:

Not a problem man. I used to go and get tested after each new person. Its free, why not? Peace of mind is a good thing, even more if it doesn't cost me any money lol.

My pops had to fork out 320$(it'll probly be cheaper for you, cuz he just took me to the nearest walk-in clinic. If you go to planned parenthood it should be a lil cheaper) DO it

Give blood, they do extensive testing of it since they gave people aids in the early 90's.

Plus, if your blood is good, you just saved three peoples lives.

i've given blood within the past 8 months or so.  so i know i'm clean for HIV.  but i'd like to have all my other bases covered, just for reassurance.

They test for everything that can be transmitted by blood.

And you can give blood every 56 days.  Its very good for you if you are a red meat eater.

This is the worst idea ive ever heard.  In fact, upon donating blood, they explicitly say dont give blood to get tested.  There is good reason for that too.  There are always failures in the screenings for HIV positive patients.  If you happen to be infected and your bag slips through the cracks, youve not saved three lives, youve killed three people.

Planned parenthood gives assistance to those that need it.  If you go in and tell them youre broke and jobless but you have have a shiny $100 bill to go towards your test, they will almost certainly test you. Then, use the remaining $160 to buy a USED netbook on craigslist.  I got mine used for $120 and im on it now.

That being said, if youre debating between your health and a laptop, maybe you should spend that money on a psychiatrist instead.

You will encounter plenty of internet café's travelling through most parts of EU and many people sitting around in stations etc will let you use theirs for a minute if you're polite and they aren't in a rush. Plus if you are realling travelling aka not staying in hotels you may find yourself with a dead battery pretty soon...

i was never deciding between my health and a laptop.  as i said, i've had no symptoms whatsoever that would lead me to believe i've got a problem.  i'm just getting tested to be a responsible, informed adult.

i'm always a bit wary buying used electronics.  i've been fucked over before in that area .  i'll be taking a look though.

i'm fairly certain Trooper offered the best alternative though.  i found out a local clinic hosts free clinic hours once a week, so i've already called and left a message to get an appt.  should be able to get one within the next couple of weeks.

That sucks. I hate it when I let my contact lens prescription lapse and have to got get another done before I run out of contacts. Usually I only get new ones when I lose one of my last set and have to walk around all like this:what:

Fucking prescriptions for glasses and contacts is a complete rip off. It like
"Uh, I know what my prescription is..."

"Well sir it might have changed."

"Yeah but I KNOW I can see just fine with -2.75's!"

"If you don't have a prescription I can't order you new lenses."

*Grumble grumble...Hands over the money and gets checked*

"Why, you're right, they are -2.75's. That will be $150 please." :crankey:

Seriously. Why do you need a PRESCRIPTION to get new contacts if you already know what strength you need?

what exactly are you loling at?  that netbooks are underpowered laptops?  because that's totally cool with me.  for a little over 200 bucks it's a compact, efficient means for me to access the internet at any given wi-fi spot.  and it'll fit easily in my backpack along with all my other backpacking gear.  not really sure i see a real downside.

Laptop man, no brainer :yesnod:.

I got an Asus HD1000A and its fucking sweet, it doesn't weigh hardly anything so I just whack it in my bag and take it everywhere with me .

If you've got the option to get one with linux on it, do that and the install windows yourself, you'll save a good $60 :yesnod:.

Not at all. I was just laughing at my own response really. I like netbooks, and personally I would run linux on one.

Computer or aids testing? Computer FTW.
