mattianyb, yours are probably Pholiota, something close to Pholiota granulosa would be my first guess, though they could also be some small inactive Gymnopilus. Spore print would be cool here.

wiscokid, yours are Gymnopilus luteus. One of the most potent gyms.

Nice!!:super: - How are you so sure about the luteus id?? - Im outa touch with the latest in gym info!! Ive found these mainly growing off of dead red maple

- but found one giant (GIANT) ground patch - caps bigger than dinner plates - and these also looked the same as my "luteus" patches - just larger from all the light(and possible added nutes) they get at the base of 3diff live trees growing off a swamp stump?

I can't wait to get some pics of the ground flush this fall!! Im forever looking:headbanger:

Let's just say I've seen a lot of them in the past few years. Trust me dude.

I used to think they were spectabilis but Mr. Mushrooms set me straight on that.

Gymnopilus spectabilis

1) G. spectabilis can grow much larger than luteus.

2) G. spectabilis usually grows from stumps or buried wood in tight clusters, never all spread out all over the log.

3) G.spectabilis is more commonly found on conifer.

4) G. spectabilis is darker colored than G.luteus, though G.luteus can look quite like G spectabilis in maturity.

5) G. spectabilis rarely, if ever, bruises blue/green. The photo of the single bluing G. spectabilis in the Stamets book is probably G.luteus.

Gymnopilus luteus

1) G. luteus grows more seperated from each other, not so much tightly clustered like G. spectabilis.

2) G. luteus is lighter colored than G.spectabilis. They are the yellow Gym.

3) G. luteus grows mainly on hardwood logs and stumps. I know that books and mushroomexpert says they can grow on conifer but I really don't think so.

4) G.luteus is apt to readily bruise blue/green, particularly in the buttons and pins.

Thanks Glick!!:super: Great to know!! - I really gota look for my ground patch this sept - I believe they are the giant spectabilis - it'd be soo cool to find both lutes and spectabilis in the same woods - 100ft apart!!  ( im def ok with the majority of my finds being Luteus!!!!!!:super:) makes me very happy

- The giant ones i found still had bruising on the stems when dried
and i pulled 3lil(BIG) pinners that totally were green/blue - this spot was so large i thought they were not active and were a lookalike at first - but indeed they they were just the largest f'n active gyms ive found yet - till sept i eagerly wait!

-Thanks again Glick - Awesome info

You've inspired me too.  first with your Azure patch,  now with these Gyms.

I'll be in the woods Northeast/central WI for the next two weeks or so,  will definitely keep my eyes open.

you say things have been really dry though? hopefully there's still a few about.

awesome pics,  thanks

It's still hard to say because Pholiota prints and Gym prints look pretty similar.

If they're a gym I don't recognize it. If they're Pholiota, you're probably looking at a few different Pholiota species that look like that.

One thing certain is that they are very most likely not active and may make someone ill if they are Pholiota.
