Window Tinting (And a Ticket)
    #10478573 -

So I got pulled over the other day while looking for a house with my friend and got a ticket for Illegal Window Tinting (14% visibility apparently whereas state law is 28%). Not amazingly pissed about it since I lucked out and had a bunch of "stuff" in my car. But damn, nobody gets tickets for window tinting around here :crankey:

Anyways, the ticket is only $94 but i'm pretty much broke and I had originally asked the place I went to to make it as dark as possible but LEGAL (family also got work done to their cars at the same place). I think 14% is a little pushed past legal :smirk:. I couldn't find anything on the ticket that said it could be waived if removed/fixed either, (but I'll keep reading).

I'm not quite sure what to do to be honest, since the tinting job was like $200~~ so I'm not sure if I should get it removed due to the loss on my part. Plus its fucking HOT in Florida so I kinda need it. Usually don't have anything in the car so its not a security type of thing... (although it did save my ass when a cop drove by while I was parked and trippin doin some stupid shit). I'll be contacting the place where I got it done at but I'm not sure what that will do. (Get the tint fixed or ticket paid?)

In NY they are strict with tints. On my last car I had 5% all around and 30% on the windshield and i
got hit with a $135 ticket. I never tint my windows past 25% anymore bc its jus asking to be pulled over
when they cant see any visibility in the car

I was in the car with my friend today, and randomly got pulled over.  Both of us were quite confused as to why... turns out his brand new car (from another state mind you, where they only require one plate) required two plates.  The cop walked back up after he got my friends info, and then goes "wait, are you an EMT?" to which my friend replied "yeah, we both are".  The cops face was kinda priceless, you could tell he truly felt bad.  My friend then went "I'm an eagle scout too".  The cop then went on to explain how "Oh shit... no disrespect, we often need you guys more than you need us, I'm really sorry.  I noticed your EMT tags on the way back over, we like to help you guys out.  I wish you told me earlier." and went on and on.  Unfortunately, he still got the ticket :crankey:

Oh, and go back to that shop and demand they not only pay for your ticket, but also make your tint legal.  Also, how the hell did the cop measure your tint %

I honestly would tell you to take it off because that cop is just gonna harrass u from now on. I have 5% and pay the ticket every few months or so it doesnt effect your ins tho. But if your ever gonna ride dirty thats their reason to pull you over

tint shops dong just arbitrarily tint peoples windows at what ever
they want, they do it at customer request for the customer
requested degree of tint, it's up to the consumer to know the law

They have some sort of device that measures how much light passes through the window

It was a State Trooper and he had some piece of equipment that he slid on top of the window when I rolled it about halfway up and it measured visibility. I'm not sure the place will pay for the ticket, let alone BOTH since its a smaller business.

Not so worried about the cop harassing me since I was only looking for a place to live, but like I said, I'm usually not riding with anything illegal.

if he resided in another state that didnt have a 2 plate
requirement the cop cant cite him, if his tag was from the
state he was cited in, then he's breaking a law

Now that i think about it prisoner depending on what state he is in bbl337 is correct. In my state if you get illegal tint they make you sign a paper saying that your car is only for shows and not for driving....

of which he wouldnt have gotten a ticket because it wouldnt have
been on the road, looks like a couple tickets because it would
have been improperly insured as well as a show car

in that case, take it to them and inform him of what the laws
are, show the ticket and make him redo the tint and possibly
tint another for free for you having to pick up the ticket, your
other option is to have it redone elsewhere and sue the guy

I bet he goes for 2 tint jobs, that'll be least costly for him

It was illegal, yes, but who gives a crap?  Just pointing out that he wouldn't give you a ticket if you look like a good person... or at least thats what he said

I didn't even think there was tint laws in Fla.

If you get pulled over here, if you take it off, you don't have to pay the ticket.

Ive been in the situation before.
I jsut paid the ticket, and had my windows redone.
I dont ride dirty very often but those blacked out windows are jsut pull me over signs for cops.

You definately need to read state laws, and bring them to the tinting place to make sure they dont exceed the standards.

I tint my own, I pull the windows out of the doors and put them
back after they've dried, it's a pain in the ass but the tint is
flawless and I've yet to have one curl

I had the same situation, I suggest you get it fixed to the legal dark limit.  28% is pretty good, in MN its 50% and i got a ticket for 5%.  If you dont fix it and the cop sees you again you will get another ticket, a little steeper price probably.

28% still will look good, better than 50:shrug:
