A fungus that is using gamma radiation as an energy source

Scientists have found some sort of a fungus growing on the Chernobyl reactor core. It is using gamma radiation in a similar pattern that the plants use visible light. The fungus is using melanin molecules to catch the high energy photons of gamma radiation. What do u say to that..isn't life the most amazing thing there is?

Yes, if plants are using photosynthesis this fungus is using radiosynthesis thus it is called radiotrophic fungus.

is pretty cool to read also,
seeing how bacteria has learned to consume many man made objects it seems feasible that one could breed bacteria over several years to be able to consume almost any man made substance (I believe this has already begun) - there have been bacteria discovered in the waste water of a nylon factory which contained bacteria which had existed for millenia however had recently acquired the ability to consume nylon products (man made.)

Ha, I remember arguing this possibility with someone.  I equivocated our nuclear waste to the original organism's oxygen waste.  Just as we live off of the pollution from early species so will future species live off of our pollution.

the only problem with that is that nothing can reduce the half-life of radioactive elements except for maybe forced collisions. The waste would still be radioactive =/

Well thats the whole problem with radioactive waste. It is really hard to force the radioactive element to decay into something that doesn't pose a threat. Time is the best solution but I don't think time is something that we have!
