1.  Be a good artist.

2.  Get an apprenticeship at a tattoo shop.

Where I live, there's a tattoo shop that offers classes.

I'll go to one on Thursday and ask them if they would like me help out. I have a portfolio, and my favorite medium is ink. I'll let them flip through my sketchbook and look at my stuff and hopefully things will work out.

How much do tattoo artists make? I don't really care about money all that much, but having it is a good thing.

Tell them this and it might increase your chance of getting hired.

being at artist is the pre-requisite.

Some people "go it alone" and buy a machine and practice on grapefruits, pig parts, and eventually their own theighs and their friends..

Or some people get apprenticeships.

If you show initiative/knowledge, eventually you'll get someone to show you whats up and give you a chance on their shops clientele -

Dont be discouraged if one shop turns you down, or if you get critisized at first.

Also - dont apprentice under an ass. Find someone whose art and ethics you respect and who keeps a clean shop and can teach you good habits..

I bet you can find information on this on www.bmezine.com

Also - going to tattoo conventions would be a good place to start.

x2 - you might have an advantage if you are already visibly modified.

alot of shops actually charge you for the Apprenticeship, much like a college charges tuition; plus you usually have to be the shop bitch for free, however, if the shop has well known artists, its worth it.

Becoming a proffesional artist is much like becoming a rockstar.
Many times it depends on who you know, your skill, and your drive to become an artist.
It took me 9 years to find a shop that would hire me, just a guy off the street with no experience in a shop.

Gather all of the experience you can, do only the best work to the best of your ability, never tattoo minors, and put together a portfolio that will snatch the attention of anyone you show it to. Take pictures of of the work you do, drawings, finished work, and if you can pictures of the healed tattoos.

The important thing is to approach this as if you are trying to become the next big thing in hollywood. Push as hard as you can, and let people know that you are serious, and are willing to do everything within your power to become a professional. It is also important to let them know that you arent a "scratcher", get certification in cpr, blood borne pathogens, and sanitation. Hell, take all of the health classes available to you.
Most importantly, be patient, if your good, you will eventually find your place.

Get some literature, and get some practice. Practice is the only way. Don't start with skin, but with time you can work your way to skin doing simple designs getting used to how the skin takes the ink. If you are a decent artist you can be a decent tattoo artist. To answer your question, they make great money. My tattoo artist travels the world doing tattoos. He charges 200 dollar minimum and probably makes about 500 bucks a day, but he is very professional and does great work.

There is alotof money to be made in the tattoo industry, but it really depends on your area, and your skill. Competition is a big variable, so its best to become well rounded in all types of work, or even to focus all of your work in one type of work.
I am well rounded in most styles, but my best work is black and grey. Being that no other artist in my area focuses on this work, I get more clients because of my specialization. But again, it all depends on area and demand.

As for practice, most professionals first practice on themselves and friends and families, despite what they will tell you. When I first picked up a machine, I put some very shitty tattoos on my upper thighs, my legs, and my right arm. I am covered in shitty work as a result, but it got me in the door to start putting work on others with better skill. Unless of course you have lower standards and put them on friends and crackhead first, I wont judge you if you do :hehehe:
Forget the grapefruit routine, it is nothing like skin and will give you no real world practice. Go to your local butcher shop and pick up some slabs of pork skin, it is normally very cheap and an excellent way to get practice. Lay the skin flat, wrap it around vases and balls, and try other odd shapes and angles to give you the idea of what its like to tattoo on a living person.

do not buy a shit machine out of a magazine. I worked in the industry for a while. If you want to get into the industry..

1. get a good portfolio, you should include- black and grey, color, portraits, also doing flash art work you see in shops can help depending on how the artist feels about flash..
2. be willing to do anything to get the apprenticeship, mine was tough, most are.
3. shop around to many many shops, chances you won't get in the first shop you try.
4. have a general idea of blood borne pathogens, CPR, and sterilization procedures. These are very important and some shops will require that you are certified in these in order to work there.

hope this helps if you have any other questions PM me..
