What kind of Mushroom tastes like Beef?
    #10335371 -

Went to some Emeril's restaurant and they had an appetizer with exotic mushrooms. I ate some of the black stuff and thought it was beef at first but no it was a mushroom.

What did I eat?

Could have been any number of mushrooms cooked with beef broth. It's really hard to tell just from your taste explanation and the fact that it was darker colored.

Why?

I've heard there are many mushrooms with a red meat flavor.

Well, spill the proverbial 'beef'.

What are they?

I was just saying "I've heard".

Shiitake:  Very versatile . Shiitake can be sautéed, broiled, baked, grilled, stir fried, or sliced thin and used raw on salads. Its meat flavor enhances almost any dish.

Yeah, that don't make it taste like a steak... Does it?

Ground beef and beef jerky don't taste like steak either.

They're still beef though.

I find that giant portebella cooked a certain way tastes much like a mushroom-steak. Dunno about how it's actually done, though.

Shiitake are probably the closest to beef.

Probably portabella or shiitake, both are used as beef-like substitutes.

I found a couple giant puffballs once, sauteed them in butter and garlic, put a dab of soy sauce on top...

I don't know if they tasted like meat, but they were good eating.
