aquarium heaters are designed to heat a large volume of water, such as a fish tank. if you are constructing an incubator, you will not need to heat nearly as much water as in a full aquarium. i use a seven gallon resevoir from a hydroponic system. it holds 12 jars with room to spare. i suspend the jars in the warmed water using vinyl coated, half inch hardware cloth (wire mesh). i use a ten-year-old, piece-of-crap fish tank heater and it works fine. I would suggest using a couple floating thermometers to get readings from different sides of the tank. remember that the warmest water will be at the very surface, so take temperature readings from different levels as well. i would also suggest adding a small amount of bleach or hydrogen peroxide to the water to keep it from breeding contaminants.

I have a little bit diffrent method to heat my incubator. I place my heater in a tall glass milk bottle filled with water. The whole bottle heats up, and gives off a very even heat throughout the incubator. You need a thermometer to get the desired temp, and getting it up to 85F is no problem. Just keep checking the temp every few hours until you get the right setting.
