Terence Mckenna- Schizophrenic or Shamanic?
    #10312755 -

This discussion hits home with me. I expereince many things people would consider me schizophrenic for yet I have had a strong enough guidance (not human) to get to the point where I am healing others and teaching them, changing their lives. Much spiritual work. my friend who I am very close with and have been friends with since I was 7 years old is not so fortunate, He became "Schizophrenic" after practicing meditation and playing with his reality. I managed to pull him out of his "schizophrenia" for about a month but he fell back in and became even more wrapped in his illusions and patterns of Illness. I know with the proper guidance he can become an excellant teacher and healer, after all this is the soul whom I watched shadows dance on the walls with as a young child.

P.S. Yes we ran out of the room screaming like little bitches.

I would agree with McKenna's separation of Shamanism and Schizophrenia in the context of culture. Roger Walsh sheds much light on the subject in his book "The World of Shamanism."

What he says a little after 5:00 about us going mad on rational objectivity is right on. We have shunned the inner realities for too long. I think the transformation McKenna discusses is already long underway.

God I love listening to him speak.

Yeah I agree with everything he says there lol.

What he says is to the ears what candy and fruit is to the mouth.

Sounds like an excerpt from his lecture 'Eros and the Eschaton' if you'd like to listen to it without the video and music.

Schizomanic? Shamaphrenic?

He was so far out there and "weird" that he lost a lot of his audience.

If you show your parents a McKenna video in all its slurred speech glory and say "Thats what I use too, hes my idol", they'd get a heart attack. They rather saw you worship Marlyn Manson and embrace the emo lifestyle.

My body I will give to pleasures,

any fear at all, for whenever I will—

at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Whaat?

Why are people so eager to demonize people? demonize everything?

Of course he wasn't schizophrenic...I think that would be fantastically obvious if he was.

Let me stress this point : Weird is NOT bad!

I'd be proud of any teen that was conscious enough to understand what Terence was saying.

I feel that my incredible level of respect for what McKenna did and talked about when hardly anyone else was, is because, for me, on an intuitive level, a lot of it just feels right.  It just seems to make sense to me based on all my life experiences.

But to say that his speech is slurred and maniacal is downright ignorant and hostile.  As he waxed out his ideas he would often say that he wanted to proven wrong and that he understood how far out there his ideas really were.

Haha, That reminds me of a dream I had awhile back where I was sitting on the bus and some guy (Unconcious of his own consciousness of course.) gets on the bus and sits next to me and I make a joke about the rain and he gets all wierded out and passivley hostile then half looks at me and says "Your wierd..." I couldn't help but bust out laughing looking at how false in nature this guy was and how unaware he was. I looked him dead in the eyes and said all relaxed with a smile, "Better wierd than lame right?" He got even more wierded out and I watched him squirm in his skin unerved by my presence. It was great.

Wierd is not bad!! and in fact it's better to be wierd than lame right?!!
