Good books on shamanism?
    #11391182 - 11/05/09 04:08 PM (8 years, 19 days ago)

I've already got Psychedelic Shamanism by Jim Dekorne (excellent book, by the way), but I'm looking more for tutorials on how to traverse the Axis Mundi into lower and upper realms.  Is this sort of shamanic journeying identical with astral projection?

I'd say so. Although the methods for inducing the trance state and subsequent projection vary across the board - anything from drums to drugs to visualization.

I really like Robert Bruce's descriptions of traversing the different levels in Chapter 26 of Astral Dynamics. He probably gives a lot more of a technical Western account than you could get from any Shaman.

Mircea Eliade's "Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy" talks a lot about different shamanic techniques, including the Axis Mundi, though I can't remember how in depth he explians it.

Not a good book if your looking for information on the actual subjective experience. Mircea was one of the first anthropologists to take a look at Shamanism, yet he didn't have a good grasp on what it was about. He considered the Shaman to be essentially mentally ill.

I didn't know his personal opinion on the matter, but the book has a lot of pure information that seemed neutrally presented.

I read the book over a year ago, but I remember a lot of it dedicated to the similarities between schizophrenia and Shamanism. Anyway, I preferred Roger Walsh's ethnographic work.

Terence McKenna speaks about how Eliade considered any shaman tradition that incorporated drug use to be a watered down form of the art - which seem prejudiced and very far off the mark imo.

That book is from what I've heard more of an academic outside look at shamanism.

The Way of the Shaman by Michael Harner is a very practical book for inducing different altered shamanic trance states for journeying. I have never tried the techniques myself, but have heard many people who are into shamanic work recommend it. It is easily available from pirate bay.

Thanks for the spelling correction.
For anyone interested, here is his entire collection in PDF format.

DeCypher, if you want, The Art of Dreaming is book 9 in the series.

'The Cosmic Serpent' by Narby and 'True Hallucinations' by McKenna are the best relations of authentic experiences.

Also check out Huna, lots of fluff to dig through but some powerful techniques there.

"If the truth can be told so as to be understood, it will be believed"

I've been reading McKennas material for awhile now, and I must say it's quite intresting. He poses a hypothesis for the development of human conciousness...through psychedelics, in particular mushrooms. He explains that shamanism is the one true "original" theology and that psychedelic shamen are the ancients of evolution.

"Shamanism isn't a religion, it's a set of techniques, and the central technique is the use of psychedelic plants"

He explains that shamans must act as exemplars in the realm of Gaian ideas and bring them back in the form of art as a way to preserve the community...or somthing to that effect

If you're interested in shamanism I suggest you check out "Food of the Gods: the search for the original tree of knowledge" from your local library.

Also, a good speech by T. McKenna can be listened to in the track "Re: Evolution" from an electronica music group known as "The Shamen" on their album Boss Drum.
Great music also

Breaking Open the Head: A Psychedelic Journey into the Heart of Contemporary Shamanism by Daniel Pinchbeck is a very enjoyable read. He outlines the history of shamanism and goes through most major drugs himself.
