Well, yeah- you would probably engineer a lame super bug.
But hypothetical bioterrorists would pick something actually dangerous, right?

Flu won't kill you if you get medical attention. People die from the flu because they don't think they are sick enough to go to the hospital.

Oh, and don't worry about overwhelming the hospital system, either. We have plenty of normal saline and IV catheters to treat entire cities. "Here's your IV bag, here's yor barf bucket. Go sit over there." No big.

Ebola virus, now there's a super bug. Read The Hot Zone for an idea of what I'm talking about. It's a bit sensationalized so it can be good reading, but reasonable plausible.

you are assuming influenzavirus is not dangerous?

on the list of potential bio-weapons it would rate fair at least. i'm not particularly worried about any of them.

as for flu deaths, you're presuming that people have equal option to visit a hospital, and you're further basing that on your experience, knowledge etc. of average flues.

All flu is similar- people die from not getting treatment for the symptoms. As far as access, it's the very most basic of care. Any hospital, clinic, or doctor's office can treat it- even a vet could. Really, the old chicken soup routine isn't a bad option. It's just a matter of going to get the treatment.

Now, are there thousands of people so stupid they'll die before they get an IV? Oh, hell yes. But you can't cure stupid.

Ebola... yeesh. Gives me bad dreams.

The swine flu does not kill the vast majority of people who have it. As long as you get to a hospital in time you'll very easily live. Any comparisons to "The Stand" are idiotic.

iv fluids will not prevent or reverse a life threatening cytokine storm. not all influenzavirus are created equal.

as for curing stupid, yes, 'tis almost a shame.

this still doesn't address the issue of poverty or simple unavailability of hospitals in developing countries, where the bulk of the world lives. in a case like this flu, that is why they are my primary concern.

africa, the poor majority of india, southease asia, indonesia, south america, mexico, etc.
