 I've never heard of that but I can see it happening.  I could imagine being treated like shit for a few weeks and not having any privileges, then suddenly talking to my friends or family.

I feel like that's how it is for enlistees.
My friend went to the boot camp up in the Great Lakes and never spoke of any emotional hurdles.

I hope it's not as bad as you say. I'm due to Officer Candidate School in Rhode Island pretty soon...

But officers undergo different training than enlistees.

The whole concept of emotional support seems pointless in a militaristic environment, I don't want my soldiers getting too emotional in the heat of battle.

what about a personal war against heavy drug addiction if you felt like stopping?

or a political war on a subject you feel passion for?

If a war is over politics, it isn't worth fighting.

And I don't see overcoming addiction as a 'war', per se. It is more like succumbing to the underlying balance of reality. You sacrificed your body's well being for your countless hours of being high; it is only reciprocal that you withstand the consequences. Without light, there is no dark. Without pleasure, there is no pain.

A girl friend of mine told me about her own navy boot camp experience. Probably why she got 'medically discharged'.

I was in the Marine Corps and i can tell you it's worse there that any branch of the service. Emotions are on high but they don't coddle you for even a second. They need to to distant yourself from your emotions, that's part of the training. The way they train people for war is to keep your head in the game basically. They don't deal with emotions, because emotions are not what they want. They want a Marine/Soldier that will do what they say without question as fast as possible. They would rather you not have emotion because they can't afford having Marines that will break down and need all sorts of emotional support in the middle of battle or even training. If they did, then all they would be doing is talking to every single recruit in boot camp every day, because that shit is tough.

You need to start thinking of your fellow soldiers as family, that way you are more invested in the work you do. They want you to get over the fact that you had a different life, and the one you are training for IS your life now. That is a HUGE part of the training. They physical part is easy, it's the emotional and mental part that is the hardest to deal with. They are training killers bottom line, and killers must learn to distance themselves from emotion or they will go insane from doing their jobs. That was the Marines anyways. I hear other branches give you time out card you can hand to the drill instructors if your having a bad a day and need a time out LOL. That's one of the things Marines laugh at about other branches because they are babied even the slightest. It's all about who is tougher, and their idea of a tough soldier is one that doesn't need anyone else but their brothers in arms. They can't afford you to be any other way.

Yeah, I'm in the airforce and when i called my parents in boot camp i cried like mad and so did everyone else.  you only get a couple minutes for the call too.  Most people there haven't been away from their family for that long before, some people were calling their wives and kids they hadn't seen for a few weeks, and those weeks feel like months.  There is plenty of emotional support in the military, but bootcamp is about indoctrination, mind control, and all that noise.  They are tying to break you down and they are good at it.

Ha, I've never heard of that either. Must be a Navy thing.
I've seen plenty of people cry at graduations and stuff, 'specially Marines' families.

They gotta toughen you up for war, what better way than to treat you like total shit and then make you cry your emotions out all in one go.

Dr :ronpaul: says to stop trying to treat the side-effects of big government and focus on the core issues. End the Federal Reserve/audit the gold reserves at Fort Knox, abolish the IRS, end all wars and occupancies, stop the building of an empire that will inevitably fail, and cut all unconstitutional federal programs. Put the power back in the peoples' hands by ending this nanny-state.

I'm sorry but if anyone does there homework before they join then they should know exactly what to expect. The recruiter will tell you anything you want to know if you ask.

I went took the asvab's, the physical passed all with flying colors but didn't sign the actual papers (last step). I talked to family and friends who had been in the Military, the recruiter as well and I also quit agreeing with our effort's overseas at the time so I never did join.

Point is he should have been aware. Other than that I mean he'll be alright, you make very strong friendships while in the military. That's what the idea is, for them to depend on eachother not there family. They do it for good reason, when your at war you don't have family to depend on it's the guy next to you.
