Cacti hardiness

I live in the south east and was wondering what are the coldest temps trichocereus species can take outdoors?

ive read on one site that they can take temps down to 26 but that temps that low can damage new growth.

Youd most likely be fine keeping yours outdoors during winter, I do. Which zone are you in?

My pachanois spent the entire winter outdoors when I lived in southeast georgia without issues.
The temperature itself is no problem, but if you expect a frost its best to cover the tips of your cacti to prevent damage. I find it good to stuff a plastic bag into a tube sock, and slip this over the top of the cactus before nightfall to prevent frost damage.

I can only see mid twenties being a problem if you factor in wind, rain, ice, and snow. Out of the elements it would be fine IME.

it got down to 17 here once this year, but that is not normal weather for GA.

we had some sleet this winter but nothing bad, i already put some outdoors and they are growing incredibly well thats why i ask, i figured if it got cold i could cover them with some of that opaque plastic so they still get light but are warm.

im planning ahead so i dont mess anything up.

last year I constructed a small pvc greenhouse such as this
and covered with cheap plastic. Its great for a small cacti collection and protects from all the detrimental effects of the winter weather.

Yeah, but i got that pick from google, tis not mine
Mine was similar, just a little smaller. Pvc is awesome though, you can create all types of designs just by snapping them together. I made one once shaped like half a buckeyball that I could pick up and move, worked great for seedlings in the garden :yesnod:

I made an experiment with a 1.5ft pedro planted directly in the ground.  I am in north central TX.  It grew about 3-4 inches when I planted it in the summer but the first freeze hurt the pedro considerably and discolored the growing tip.  It made it most of the way through Fall and died the first part of Winter.

If it is suppose to freeze, I would bring them in.  I was hoping they could withstand our winters so that I could just put them in the ground, I will do that, but after I build a greenhouse for them :frown:

short cold snaps are not a problem, you may get some frost damage on the tips and such.
just avoid long term exposure to cold temps if possible.
i lost around half of my trichs this winter and it didn't even get down to freezing in my garage.
they looked absolutely fine when they were in there, but when i took them out and bought them inside to wake them up from dormancy last month they began to rot out...

yup, big ouch...
that included alot of my monstrose and cristate specimens too...
not to mention the best part of 100 smaller cacti :crankey:

yeah so anyone who is putting their cacti into dormancy for the winter, try to keep it between 5c & 10c (40 - 50f)
if it's short term, then don't worry about it so much.

Dammit man. Its just the nature of the hobby though. Shit happens . It doesn't really matter how good you are, or how careful you think you are being. Well, I'm going to get off here now, smoke a bowl, and think about all those cacti that you neglected lol.

learning from our mistakes is all we can do.
