Parachute rigging is a legit job, I've never jumped rounds or in the military but I love skydiving in the public world and hang out with a fair few military riggers.

Requiring you to "jump" is probably initially to the extent of a introductory "dope a rope" AKA static line course, a few weeks of multiple hours of day learning how to roll out a high impact landing, then they just dump you out the door (around 5 times in Australia) at 1000ft with a round parachute till you descend and break your ankles :cool: Though really, static line is fucking rough but people get through it.

After that the majority of the time is packing and repairing round parachutes.

From that point onwards later on you can learn how pack ram air parachutes and ram air reserves which would require you do do a military freefall course (read: skydiving).

After you get out of the Army, you can get a civilian rigger rating. Going rates can be anywhere near $75 for a reserve repack, $150 to assemble full rigs, $X amount for all the various repairs + 99.9% of the time you end up being a dealer for the parachuting companies and sell products.

Thats some nice info, Ive never even considered having anything to do with parachutes, The job is prolly taken now but that does sound like an interesting avenue and ive broken one ankle before. God i hate to think of 2 broken ankles. But i have always wanted to sky dive, Anyway even with my low test scores, im hoping to hold out for a slightly bigger bonus. I'm not settling for 8k. I will settle for 20k though, And i could maybe get away with 12-15k if the job was good. But nothing under ten.

It's a skill that's useful in the civilian world (with the appropiate conversion training).

Sporting reserve parachutes have to be packed every 180 days by a certified master rigger.
That's 30,000 (jumpers US) x $75 x twice a year = $4.5 million in reserve repacks

Along with that, the majority of jumpers require shit to be assembled, AAD (automatic activation devices) to be installed with the reserve, lots of other coin.

All riggers can work as "packers" at a dropzone, $10 a pack job, I personally know guys that can pull 10 an hour if they hammer it out, that's $100 an hour. Tandem rigs? $20 a pack job, but a bit more complex, though there's one guy in Australia that was known to do 78 tandem packjobs in a single day.

Parachute rigging, you become a MASTER at sewing in all forms. Anytime someones parachute rips = $$, modification = $$, harness repair = $$, putting new lines on a canopy = $$

Plus like I said, close to 100% of parachute riggers are in the business of selling used gear and a large majority of them are dealers for new gear = middle man type profits... being that a new set of gear can run $8000 USD, it's another avenue to make money.

Just trying to point out something here.

If you go into the military, you make bloody sure you choose something that applies to the outside world.

Don't go combat.

IT/Signals is another good one, I had a cousin come out of doing IT work in the Army onto $100k for Nestle (the chocolate company).

I dont know what nestle makes but it didnt smell like chocolate, i used to live right next to one of their plants and it made the whole town smell like a fart wrapped in garbage.

a few years ago i felt like my life was going nowheres and i seriously considered joining the army.  i'm really really glad that i did not.

i know how it is appealing to think of the army as an escape from the hopelessness of your situation, but don't do it.  fuck the army. 

go read some books, learn a skill on your own, go to school.  if your grandma is going to be putting you up, it's the perfect opportunity for you to invest in something.  find motivation inside yourself, not from some retard yelling orders at you.

I find it strange how many people are advocating not joining the combat arms team.
In this world, a country needs an army. Only an idealist will tell you differently. If you feel like it's something you could do, I highly encourage you to join the forces. Just make sure you are aware of all the risks, catches, and clauses in your contract and your work.

My grandma is helping me out while i dont have a car getting to and from work and i lived with her for a couple months while in between apartments.  Just go to her house.  Get a job. save some cash.  Get a student loan go to school.  Be a success.  Smoke weed while doing the whole thing.  The army can establish you(if you are not shot).  Or you can establish you and your grandma can help.  Good Luck:thumbup:

You can join the air force and fly planes AND be given speed so you can fly all night and accomplish you;re mission. Beats the fuck out of being a god damn hippie living with his grandma.

It is a good way to die painfully in an unfamiliar place.

I was in the military and don't recommend it.
