Fighting and Hockey

Does anyone else get sick of idiotic hockey fans who claim that fighting is an integral part of their sport and anyone who doesn't like it either doesn't understand the game or is some kind of panty-waist faggot?

This is fresh in my mind after the events at the Blackhawks game of a few nights ago.  The Hawks were down 3-0 and getting soundly beaten.  They were pretty frustrated and decided the best way to deal with their feelings would be to just beat the other team up.  The end result was that two Hawks got got penalty minutes, the other team got a 5-3 power play, scored, and went on to win.

After the game and the next day in the paper, the Hawks coach praised his team and said he liked instigating the fights because it showed spirit.

Wouldn't trying to put the puck in the back of the net show some real spirit?

Now don't get me wrong, I don't give a fuck about hockey.  But I don't think you'll have a lot of people taking your sport seriously if you continue to allow brawls to erupt in the middle of the action.  Could you imagine this in any other sport?  People hit each other just as hard in football, but they don't take off their helmets and start punching each other in the teeth.  And for all the talk about how NBA players are drug-addled and broken-homed street-freaks you don't see Shaq and Amare throwing down in the middle of the key.

If fighting is such an integral part of the sport, why is it penalized?

Like I said, I think hockey is stupid as fuck but it bothers me that it's fans can't understand why nobody takes it seriously.  You have to wonder if the potential Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods of hockey quit before even starting, saying, "Fuck no, I'm not playing any sport where some seven foot-tall Russian goon is going to get paid 5 million bucks a year to punch me in the mouth."

That said, here's a incredibly awesome clip of the Boston Bruins going into the stands to beat the shit out of NY Rangers fans that were talking smack.  Go #9!

Im a big fan of fighting in hockey.  The last bastion of the warmonger left in sports.  In the NBA if a player gets angry he thinks to himself, 'man fuck that guy, Im gonna grab that ball, dribble up to him, evade his maneuvers to steal the ball, fake right then lunge to the left, fall back and shoot a fade away three pointer"  The hockey  man says, 'man Im gonna fuck that nigga up'  The ref's down also, such a good sport

I think I made it pretty clear I that I neither watch nor care about hockey.

I don't actively dislike it.  I don't care enough to dislike it.

This was just a critique on people who expect hockey to be taken seriously by anyone when an integral part of the game involves not skill, talent, grace, speed, or any kind of athletic ability, but rather the willingness to get punched in the teeth by some huge goon.

Don't like it?  Don't read it.

Hockey...meh.  But I say let them fight, it fits the sport well.  Now if someone will post the youtube video of the NHL player who got his neck artery cut by a players skate blade in a freakish accident, then barely survived with blood squirting everywhere, my day will be made.

Funniest thing I've read in a while...

Integral to hockey or not, it's really a small part of the game. It's basically just goons pounding on other goons. Skill players never (rarely, some skill players are gigantic and/or crazy goons) fight goons. If a goon tried to attack a skill player it would lead to a full on brawl rather than organized grab-heavy fisticuffs. Besides, getting hit with a solid body check at high speed in open ice dwarfs the pain of a few punches to the face, so it's all a little silly.

Which is why you're having this issue.  I played hockey my whole life and before you jump to conclusions I only fought once, and I wasn't the one who started it.  Neither hockey players nor fans could care less if anyone takes hockey "less seriously" because there's fighting in the game.  What the fighting adds to the game is it keeps you honest.  If you're on the ice and you're throwing the butt of your stick up in people's faces, in their ribs, or generally being a dirty player you're gonna get called out on it by a guy ready to brawl.  And it's not like you HAVE to fight, like they're forced to, the player has an option at any time to avoid the fight and in fact the other player would get a misconduct penalty for instigating, they obviously want to fight.

Trust me, the reason you don't understand it, or think we don't understand it, is just simply because it's not your game and you don't understand the full scope of it.  (Just like when you watch MMA just to see the knockouts and you don't understand why sometimes they lay on each other for 5 minutes and it seems like they aren't doing anything)
