OBAMA DEMANDED GM'S CEO RESIGN

The Obama administration asked Rick Wagoner, the chairman and CEO of General Motors, to step down and he agreed, a White House official said.

Wagoner's departure is one of the remarkable strings attached to a new aid package the administration plans to offer GM.

The White House confirmed Wagoner was leaving at the government's behest after The Associated Press reported his immediate departure, without giving a reason.

On Monday, President Obama is to unveil his plans for the auto industry, including a response to a request for additional funds by GM and Chrysler.

"I do not view the labor movement as part of the problem. To me it's part of the solution."

I wonder if this move is more for public perception than anything else?

In any case, Wagoner did lead the company into this situation, maybe it is time for him to leave. :shrug:

I have no problem with Wagoner leading, but I think the unions should be dissolved for the same reasons.

Which is precisely the point.

Although, not the only reason for failure for the Big Three, unions are definitely in the front running. When I lived in Detroit, I saw UAW workers getting laid off all the time........

I always asked them, " why do you pay your dues....if you can still get pink slipped like any swinging dick?"

My personal belief is that unions used to have a place for the American worker.....in the last twenty years the Unions themselves cared more about their own existence as an organization, then the workers they supposedly represented.....  (kinda sounds like our Federal legislature)

Any way, Brass Tax =  they costed the Big Three millions in overhead they could not suck up.

(the leadership within the Big Three is also to blame for accepting this)

In response to the article,
To have direct intervention from the executive  (or least the appearances thereof) is quite troubling.

if the government is dead-set on giving them money, then i agree this was a necessary step.

the fact that the government is giving them money, as well as removing a citizen from their job in the private sector, is disturbing.

I don't think it's really that disturbing. It was just one of the conditions of the bailout.

Absolutely, and in a big part because he gave into insane, unmaintainable union contracts.  The same way that massive salaries and bonuses for executives kill companies, so can the unions.  If Obama really wants to get rid of the problem at GM, he needs to attack it from both ends... management and the unions... otherwise he is wasting tax payer money to support a sinking ship for a few more months.  Keeping the unions alive with taxpayer money is not much different than paying bonuses at AIG with taxpayer money.

Edit: when I talk about getting rid of the unions, I am speaking towards the existing labor contracts, not the actual unions.

i dont necessarily disagree with obamas' action.. but what bothers me is this double standard for detroit vs companies such as AIG..that have done far more damage...

Because it isn't the actual unions that are the problem.  It is the insane labor contracts that management made with the unions that are the problem.

Obama has stated that the labor contracts need to be reworked and all parties involved have major concessions that need to be made.
