Okay, I told him what I thought.

"I find President Obama's comment to be short sighted and arrogant.

How can releasing thousands of nonviolent marijuana offenders from jail and taxing a multi-billion dollar industry not be in the best interest of the economy?

Marijuana is estimated to be the top cash crop in the United States by economists and drug war scientists.

Obama's flippant answer, his chuckling minions in the background, as well as the ridicule he showed his online supporters who voted this question to first place, all show a significant lack of respect for what millions of people want.

Marijuana questions consistently top the empty play at democracy called "Open for Questions", and yet he continually dismisses them.
How is this any different from any other politician who claims to follow the will of the people, and then backs down at the moment of truth?"

Something to take into consideration.

The drug war probably equals more drugs and profit, as legalization. Changing the current infrastructure would be very difficult.

Im pretty sure the drug war is as beneficial for the economy, as legalizing drugs would be. So its sort of a moot debate under those pretenses.

The real issue isn't legalization to help the economy, but treating drug use as a health issue and not a criminal one.

Obama totally has a point - that a bunch of stoned teenagers who browse the internet are the ones weighting the list of questions to be addressed.

The people weighting these issues online, are not the most important demographic (debatable.)

The people that have other issues, do not have legions of bored stoners wasting time on the internet, to rally behind their causes...

So, lets keep that in mind before saying Obama is unfair.

I think his internet approach is novel and good - but in no way is a fair representation of "the people in America."

So what you're saying is that it is ok to decide that the opinion of one group of people is more important then another group of people, despite the ladder group being a very large part of the American population, with supposedly equal rights, and all that good stuff. If you use the internet, and entertain the notion of legalizing cannabis, your opinion no longer counts...

Then why not public statement about this instead of pretending like everyone has an equal say in what is important?

So an automatic comment section on a web journal is the drug czar personally wanting our opinion on this?

Hardly the case i think.

It is the Office of National Drug Control Policy weblog, the first Cabinet-level agency with it's own weblog.

This is what I said.

"I think his dismissive, condescending tone (that laugh) and simplistic answer with no substantial backing to his reasoning; not even drug-war rhetoric, though, that's a blessing. I also think his comment about his constituents "I don't know what this says about my online voters"was very disrespectful. This is the third or fourth time it, legalization of a drug far safer then alcohol Cannabis sativa topped the list. I doubt Obama is as crass as he appeared, but he needs to wake up. The market for cannabis is huge, epic even. The marketing of this plant in troubled times would be like when we built ships and weapons for WWII. The use of Cannabis has remained rather stable throughout it's history of use in this country as a recreational commodity, and the Netherlands example shows that it may in fact decrease the use by removing the "forbidden fruit" allure (per-capita we smoke more). Please, as our new drug czar, look at the science and not the propaganda; the invasion of the average citizen for a weed; the fact that this is what is causing our prison overcrowding, not an evil populace. The only reason we don't all support this plant, and even industrial hemp, is because of rhetoric from the thirties, through Reagan's era. Be a man of the people, and help free us, this administration is in a position to change and save the country in many ways. Not all Cannabis smokers are inarticulate, lazy "hippies", we are mothers and fathers; collage students; and even Michel Phelps. I believe you'll help do what is right, I also believe Obama is laughing at the word "growing" in the context of a Cannabis question, or so I will tell myself for now.

Remember: People over politics; science over morality; freedom over babysitting.

Thank you for your time."

Its debatable i suppose.

I tend to think that the government should answer to the taxpayers, and not stoned teenagers. (i cannot say conclusively that this is, or isn't the case in this situation.)

It would be interesting to see the statistics about the people who weighted the question about legalization.

I personally don't think that legalization is a good way to  fix the economy quickly and that stoners are taking advantage of obamas online ear every chance they get.

I think this devalidates their argument to an extent, at least in the eyes of the people.

I think his response was reasonable.

I have argued many times, I'm not in the mood to pick at what you say...but I will.

There are many stoner taxpayers, and even stoned teenagers live here. Why is their say not important, because they aren't funding(though, by living here and consuming, and sometimes working they are) the public war machine that we call a government, that arrests us for a plant.

Well, you have no facts to back up your claim, though, if you look around even this site, those who aren't blatantly wrong do.

How so? The fact that thousands of people who may or may not smoke pot voted it to the top of his site four times? Even if they didn't, the idea that a group can make a plant illegal is for authoritarian scum. Really, the US is supposed to be about personal responsibility, and this "you can't have that, we say it's bad" idea where they parent us and then lie, like parents about the dangers makes me completely sick, I litterally could vomit and wish I could kill anyone who thinks in suck an Un-American, in fact anti-human and freedom way. It's that bad, it's not an opinion.

He laughed at the people, or at the word "growing" in the context of a cannabis related question, I hope it's the latter. It was at the top of his site four or five times. There is no way to say this except you are wrong. It's simple, your opinion is wrong because the other side has been proven through the will of the people, and science, to be so. I'm sick of the poor argument on the prohibition side, and obviously the people are too, except the fucking idiots.

I sort of agree with the ghost too. It comes down to "should the gov delve this far into my rectum"(no) "what is the science"(it's safer then legal drugs, and easier to get) and "when these two opinions collide, will making a law that effects one to please the other really effect the other ehen they are not truly being effected"(it's like smoking, if you don't like my pot get the fuck outa my home)

So potheads and the online community don't count? If those people aren't important than who is? A bunch of seniors on their death bed who won't live to see the consequences of their opinion? People too befuddled by technology to ask a question online?

The anti-prohibition movement has been criticized for not being active enough. "Pot will never be legalized because most stoners just sit around and get high." And the same has been said about young voters. They're too apathetic to even voice their opinion... Well maybe this is the reason why. Opinions are voiced and then they're brushed off with laughter by a crowd of air heads who's blind faith in "change" is more moronic than me in a state of blissful intoxication.

Oh, I'm sorry we're taking advantage of the online medium. Well lobbyists take advantage of the money they have to push their agenda and politicians are certainly content lining their pockets with it. I suppose only the opinions of those with the most resources matter? If there's one thing people have it's a voice and potheads or not we should make ours as loud possible.

And if Obama wants to answer to taxpayers rather than stoned teenagers maybe he should explain why billions are wasted every year on marijuana prohibition alone. They may not have asked it, but it's certainly relevant. Besides that viewpoint (answer to taxpayers, not stoners) is fucking ignorant. The government is in place to protect the people, not just the people with money. I fail to see what my personal freedoms have to do with which tax bracket I'm in.
