Ok I have a Decision to make.
    #10047357 -

So I have a choice.

Choice 1: I could go in the army and be set up for life financially. I'll be sacrificing my freedom for job security and getting paid atleast 1300 a month to start and if im in for 2 years i get over 2 grand a month. Plus they will pay for my education and the job training i get will translate into a good job when i get back to the real world. Down side is I cannot do any more drugs, no more weed and the hopes of growing shrooms for myself go down the tubes.

Choice 2: I go and live with my grandmother who in exchange for me not enlisting will let me live at her house, where there is cable internet home cooked meals and satelite tv. She will also let me use her car to find a job and then continue to do so to get too and from work until i can get my own car on the road. I still get to smoke weed and grow my shrooms as I please.

So with the army im sacrificing as i said my freedom for job security and a real chance at a future. With my grandmother I am enjoying my freedom but sacrificing any job security  and i still get to do drugs.

I would love to hear what you all think I should do, Make the choice for me its really as simple as that.

It's not worth it to be in a position where you may have to kill, just to make a few bucks.

$2000/mo isn't very much in any case.

It is when you dont have to spend it on anything at all. Live in the barracks save it up until you get out.

If you get out.

And no, it's still not all that much compared to most professional careers.

But in any case, take a good hard look at some of the corpses from Gaza and Iraq before you make your decision. Those people were never any threat to your country. Those people just wanted to live, the same as you and I do, the vast majority killed were not even armed.

Look at the soldiers now coming back with PTSD and no government to support them medically.

I don't have even the faintest clue who you are, but I know you have more potential than you would be exercising if you joined the military.

It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder.

Not really sure thats the case. Everyone is different, but still. Education is the path towards financial success.

That aside, you would need to be sure your going in for the right reasons. If you're being forced than no way, but its something you feel you need to do, then do it. Enlisting into a war leaves more to ponder than mere financial gain, and drug use....

You think you're going to get great education and training?

My cousin served in both the Australian 4RAR (commando's) and SAS. Been to Afgan 3 - 4 times, Iraq 3 - 4 times (currently there atm) among other shit like East Timor.

He's got a nice house, but time and time again he goes back to the Army because he has no real world skills.

He's on $200k+ atm being deployed, but after his 12 years of intense training at the HIGHEST level of Australian military, when he comes back from war he ends up laying bricks at a construction site for $19/hr.

In/out/in/out, perhaps if he did a trade or Officer, maybe... but infantry/special forces skills are not needed in the real world.

So if you do go in, make sure it's something like IT/signals or something useful in the real world.

I wouldn't go in for the money.  Really, as someone else said, 2 grand a month isn't much.  Even saved over 2 years that's less than 50k.

Army's not the absolute worst choice if you're desperate. I've even considered it in the past. But in your case the alternative sounds a lot better. Free place to live, free tv, homecooked meals, free transportation and you still get to do drugs. Why the fuck would anyone join the army when they've got all that?

Before signing up, talk with some people that were in the army and ask them about their experiences.  It may be for you, or it may not, but get an honest feel of what you are getting into before committing.  Don't trust recruiters or (most) people already in the army... they have every reason to lie ($$$), and no reason not to.

thinking it over [Re: just me]
    #10050793 -

all my family is on the east coast, who knows where they will send me, and i wont be able to come back for a while. I'll miss everyone so much. Quite honestly I love my home state of NY. Why would I want to leave it? These are the questions I ask myself. Whats more valuable to me, and what would make me happy? Am I just trying to make something of myself to avoid becoming like my dead beat father. Are all of us trying in some way to avoid becoming like our parents? Well tomorrow I go and atleast look at the jobs that I can apply for in the army with my asvab score being what it is. I havent signed anything yet though and believe me i will keep this thread going as a personal blog until I make my final decision.

Keep the insight coming i'm listening to everyone. If youve got any questions for me, feel free to ask. ^_^

recruiter came over today [Re: happyhardcore22]
    #10053064 -

The Recruiter came over today, Apparently only 4 jobs were open most of which didnt carry bonuses and the ones that did were only 8K. Two of which wouldve been working with toxic chemicals like nerve gas and repairing machinery, or being a parachute packer, that also would require me to jump out of planes. Im not sure if there was a bonus attached to that. He said he'd check again monday but as of right now its apparent theres no rush yet, he basically said to just get on with my plans and if something comes up he will tell me. He's going to check again monday. Nothing really appealed to me, and im starting to think me and my recruiter arnt a good match, from what i saw this 18 yr old girl had a much better relationship with her recruiter. I know exactly why lol.
