I think psychedelics can give temporary spiritual and intellectual enlightenment. I don't think it can last more than a few hours. But I think with psychedelics the enlightenment you get is pure insanity also. I think enlightenment while sober may be possible but probably extremely rare. I would rather just be happy with everything and never have to worry about anything. That would be very difficult because my mind is always active and thinking about the problems of the world and my own problems. And it's as close to enlightenment as I'd ever want to be.

I think enlightenment is just a state of mind. There's many definitions of it, and I don't think it's far fetched to consider that some people are completely enlightened while sober.

enlightenment, imo, isn't a state in which you arrive at, it's evolution of self-awareness, to which there is no end.  i don't like the term.

From the responses I doubt many in this thread have thoroughly looked at what the famous teachers have said. "ENLIGHTENMENT" IS NOT AN AMBIGUOUS OR INCONSISTENT TERM. Go read a book!!

yeah, but only because people invent their own definitions on this site, like "Icelander's enlightenment". Why do people think the word "enlightenment" is open to any definition they like? You wouldn't substitute a definition of "banana" for "cookie" so why personal notions of whatever for "enlightenment"?

enlightenment cant be seen by the physical eye, or the conceptual mind

it can indeed be framed by the conceptual mind.

you're proving my point, we don't see enlightenment in the same way.

no, I'm not proving your point. If you don't know what a trilobyte is, does that prove that it has no standard definition?

ok, if you're such the expert on enlightenment, what is the definition?

I support the banana/cookie theory. Enlightenment is well defined, yet mis-used on this site. That doesn't change the definition. If you use another definition you are talking non-sense.

yes, but someone who hasn't experienced enlightenment in the slightest will define those definitions differently based on their experience.

Most simply, recognition of oneself as pure consciousness rather than one's mind. I don't need to be an expert to know this. A little perusing of Buddhist or Yogic theory will make this quite clear, or listening to a little commentary on comparative religion.

that's a very limited definition, and fails in my book
not to mention it's a definition, not the definition

guess all other definitions are nonsensical...

to the fucking point:

enlightenment is an experience, bread and peanut butter aren't, unless eaten

thus, enlightenment is defined and interpreted differently and uniquely by those who experience it.

lol jesus christ this thread makes me want to vomit.

if there are any people here who are truly "enlightened"  however you want to fucking define that, theyre probably too fucking stupid to realize it because theyre arguing whether or not theyre enlightened.

douchebags.
