I have never had to take a cab before.

How much, on average, do they cost?

depends on how far your going. for me i would always just have 20 but usually between 7-12 dollars. but it really depends how far your going thats when i lived in a average size town not a big city.

Depends how far you're going.

They're not bad if you're in a city and need to get somewhere relatively close.  If you're going more than a few miles, expect to part with some cash.

Hehe, when I was in an unnamed third world country, I took a 2 hour long cab ride for $3. Cab fairs suck here though, I'd take the bus.

I may be going to Vegas this spring
and was wondering if I should rent a car
or just use a taxi service?

I don't feel comfortable driving in a strange city.

Public transportation always has a learning curve.
After many years and many cities I still haven't figured out what a good tip wage is though.

That's one of those catch-22 deals.  More often than not, when you take a cab, you're too drunk to really think about or remember how much they cost.

I've had a DUI...  Fucked up.  Taxis rip you off but if you've had one you feel like you're being forced into overpriced fares.  blah.

I live in a town of ~3000
There is no cab service in my town.

Never had the opportunity to use a cab

:shrug:

I used one when I was stationed in Germany
but that was back in the '80s

never had to use a cab stateside.

Cabs vary from city to city. In major cities like NYC and Philly they are metered and fairly predictable (and you can pay with credit card now). But in cities like Atlanta and Newark, a lot of the cabs don't even have meters and it's not regulated by the city at all as far as I can tell, so you get raped on the fare.

Nope, not in the cabs I've been in. Or they claim the meter is broken. In that situation it's best to negotiate a price before leaving.

Thats what I was thinking about.

Would it be just as cheap to use a cab to get from place to place.
Or just rent a car and pay the extra cash for parking and valet tips...etc.
I'm thinking about taking a trip to Vegas this spring, and was just considering my options.
