Enough FAE
    #9858298 -

I have a shotgun FC that I currently fan 2-3 times per day... is that enough or do I need to be fanning more often?

As long as its REALLY peppered with holes (like it actually looks like it got a dozen shells of 00 buck shot at it), I think thats gonna be fine.  More fanning might be better - but when I used a shotgun FC I only fanned it about twice a day.

Do it as often as you remember - but dont cancel a hot date to fan your cakes.

LOL!!! I don't need to worry about that... my hubby lives with me and we are kinda hermits.

I only have like 2.5" of perlite (I used a full 8qt bag) and my humidity drops below 90% like twice a day so I mist/fan and get it back up... I'm just worried that I'm not getting enough FAE.

i plan on using shotgun fc with my first. I would suppose that its better to fan too often, than too little , as long as humidity is kept right?

To me it sounds like you should be far more worried about your humidity at this point than your FAE.

Humidity is the #1 factor for growing mushrooms.  FAE is maybe #2, but if you have enough holes that your humidity is going down, you are getting lots of FAE, get it?

Focus on fanning at the pinning stage - fanning is the key factor in promoting little babies to form.  Once theyve formed, switch to focusing heavily on providing enough moisture for them to grow.

I birthed my cakes a few days ago (and another today that's in a dunk now). So I should be focusing on FAE until they pin and then focus on moisture?

I mean....

Both.  I dont know the specifics (search some of RogerRabits posts for this) but mushrooms need something like 90% or higher humidity to grow.  If you drop below that, FAE isnt doing you any good - nothings gonna grow.

On the other hand - if you just put your cakes in a tub full of wet perlite with no holes and never fan it - youre sitting at 99 or 100% humidity but also nothing is gonna grow.

There is a happy medium that isnt too hard to find.

But yea, FAE and light are most important at the pinning stage.  I saw a post the other day saying that exposing a substrate (that was pinning poorly) to some sunlight for a few minutes triggered an explosion of pins.  Just a thought.

My humidity likes to hover around 89% though when I woke up this morning it was at 84%... I intend on getting more perlite (only have 2.5") when I have a job and can afford to do so, until then *mist mist mist, fan fan fan*

Get some more perlite in there.  You want five inches or so.  However, humidity isn't the MOST important thing.  Air exchange is.  You can easily mist to make up for lost moisture, but without proper fresh air, there won't be any moisture loss from the substrate, which just happens to be the number 1 pinning trigger.  Fan whenever you think of it, but the shotgun terrarium will take care of itself when you're at work or whatever.  Simply mist to make up for moisture that evaporates from the substrate, and the over-spray will re-moisten the perlite at the same time.

Your orientation is your business.  Let's all keep on topic please.
