Do I need to eat meat to build muscle?
    #9796574 -

Does eating meat really make that much of a difference?

I have been a vegetarian for a few years now, and don't really want to stoop to eating meat, but I would really like to build muscle.

Right now I am eating pretty high protein with egg whites at just about every meal and a decent amount of nuts, beans, soy, etc.

Am I really missing out by not eating meat?  Anyone have experience?

Should I at the very least invest in some whey protein?

Yeah its not hard once you get into it, its harder if your eating raw though.  If your eating eggs don't just eat the white, the yolk will help you build muscle.  Get hemp protein not whey, or get some hemp seeds and mix into smoothies.  What you really need to do is eat lots of calories, I recommend eating lots of fruit for calories and then 30 minutes after fruit eat your heavier protein/fat foods along with greens.  Making green juice with broccoli, kale, and other greens is a good way to get some extra protein and greens.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty.

No, you don't have to eat meat. You just have to eat a proper balanced veg diet.
There are some hardcore vegetarian bodybuilders out there.

You can gain some, but you won't be as successful as meat eaters.

I don't eat meat much often anymore. I instead eat a varied type of non-meat things that contain proteins (similar to your list). Funny enough mushrooms actually contain quite a bit of them. Just thought I'd mention since you never put them on your list and they often have a lot of good vitamins.

edit: Don't many body builders gain muscle by carbo-loading. Lots of carb food has no meat.

Body building requires protein, bottom line.  "Carbo-loading" is just how they handle the carbs in their diet, which are also important, but don't think that they just eat tons of carbs and skip on the protein.

Bodybuilders carb load to replenish diminished glycogen stores. This might result in a fuller look, because water is stored and bonded to muscle fibers which makes them look bigger. That's it.

Vegetarians and vegans will swear up and down that you can become large and in charge without meat, but it's a completely uphill battle. You will not get very large at all, not unless you have phenomenal genetics. You will have little muscularity if you continue down this path.

Whole eggs, red meat, talipia, all great sources of arachidonic acid. Steak and fish also have lots of creatine which will help you bulk up. Animal protein is anabolic. You will need some appreciable level of protein going into your system if you want to grow muscle. Natural lifters need much more protein than those on sauce because you'll have a very weak protein turn over rate. On sauce you can synthesis protein much more efficiently but if you're not even a meat eater, I take it that you're not a hardcore lifter either.. even if you just want to fill out a little more, eat some meat.

Soy is an all right source of protein but it contains phytoestrogens and too much estrogen isn't good. Lots of people end up getting gyno even if they don't touch sauce. I eat a little soy now and again but I have to be very careful as my nipples are very sensitive to estrogen. It's not the best source but I eat everything from seafood to poultry, red meat, everything.

You can get protein from other sources.

I mean it all depends on how big you want to get. Im fairly lean and athletic and i rarely eat meat.. Im not a vegetarian, im just not a big fan of it. Im perfectly fine.

See if you can get in touch with anyone into the sport who is also a vegetarian, they will have good advice for you. Or a doctor as well.

Goodluck.

The vegetarian bodybuilders that have a good amount of muscle (and aren't using steroids) have good genetics to thank. If u are naturally a skinny person then u probably wouldn't have as good results if u did eat meat. That said I go to the gym a lot and used to eat a lot of meat but now my only pure protein sources are fish and protein powder and I haven't lost muscle. Get some protein powder.

Most protein powders are derived from animals. Whey is the way to go (no pun intended). Casein protein and milk protein isolate is good to mix with it too. I do this because even whole milk has a lot of lactose and it makes me puffy. I used to drink a gallon of milk every day because I was so addicted.

GEMA protein is a great protein source but it's very expensive. I would get some whey protein and call it a day. Get in some other protein sources from animal flesh because it's the best protein that nature produces. It will make a huge difference, guaranteed.

I would use a hemp powder to make smoothies, it provides more antioxidants which are important and furthermore, blending whey with fruit like blueberries when making smoothies, all the antioxidants in the blueberries will combine with the casein protein for which they have high affinity, and you will not get any of the antioxidant value.

Antioxidants are important if your working out because you need to counteract all the free radical damage you cause exercising.
