Aspen vs Basswood

My farm has been using aspen for our blocks for the past few months with awesome results. It is fresh milled and works better than any type of sawdust or woodpellet fuel I've ever tried.

We went back to the same mill to get more and all they had was basswood. After doing a little research these two types of tree seem very similar and I'm wondering if I can expect similar results.

Opinions?

Disclaimer: I have not tried basswood (linden) for mushrooms yet. However, the fiber structure is indeed very similar, and the density matches almost perfectly to aspens. I would say it should be just fine. Please, keep us updated if you try it!

Just an update: The basswood seems to be working fine. I can't see a noticeable difference in the colonization speed between that and aspen. We will see if there are any differences in the fruiting in a few weeks.

Most of the hardwoods I've used work just fine.  Just use whatever you can get either free or for a good price.

RR that seems to be true from my experiences as well. The only major difference I have noticed is between fresh milled sawdust and wood burning stove pellets.

Stove pellets take forever to colonize, although they fruit just fine. From what we have seen fresh milled sawdust in the shiitake blocks will fruit nearly three weeks sooner than blocks made of furnace pellets.

I found a trick with stove pellets.  Hydrate them so they turn back to sawdust, and then spread out to dry.  Once completely dry, re-hydrate, sterilize and use.  This takes care of the colonization problem, provided they were hardwood sawdust to begin with.
