How cold did it get to kill off your calea? I brought mine in, but am curious as to their cold tolerance.

it was 22ºF in my back yard the other night. i spent 2 hours covering all my plants so the damage was minimal. My poor mango lost a great deal of its flowers though.

Some may remember the 1989 record where they closed Disney World because of too much snow. However, back at the turn of the century, they had an extreme freeze which killed off wildlife and even hardwoods all the way to the Everglades!

Well I was living in N. Fl in 1989 freeze and we had gone to Disney World for Christmas. It was closed due to light snow, ice, and 'damn cold.' Jacksonville however, had areas of noticeable snow and bridges were closed due to ice etc. I have read about the turn of the century  freeze which virtually destroyed the citrus industry all the way south (temps as low as 11 deg in parts).
It also snowed two other times during my 50 years in N Fl.

We are long overdue for these normal Fl freezes. One important benefit is that they control invasive tropical plant and animal species which are otherwise predicted to take over the state.

WOW man, that's crazy.See,a lot of people think Florida is tropical, and it never gets cold, but I can assure you Florida is a temperate climate, and it does it cold, and freeze here, but it comes in short spurts, and never stays cold for long. That is our advantage:grin:I agree though, there are a lot of invasive plant and animal species introduced here, that are competing with our natural wildlife, and I guess it's mother natures way of ridding some of it from here:grin:

Yeah, there is another "most invasive" Fl species which I fear nature will come to reckoning with soon. And it is seldomly of 'tropical' origin.

its interesting to see species that are conditioned to a certain "lifestlye" get wrecked by a freak climate change. suppose only good can come from it:shrug:

that freeze was almost like a forest fire ripping thru...

i lost a few daturas and hbwr from cold and wetness

Edit:

amberica, did u need more calea?
