Just Bought A Hookah

So I bought my first hookah.

Honestly, I've never set one up, nor have I ever smoked any shisha while I was sober.

I'm a bit confused on this "charcoal" bit. How does that work? My hookah is coming with a bunch of freebies, and it includes the charcoal...I'm just confused as to how to use it.

I searched around, came up empty.

Any pros out there?

Also; is it OK to smoke cannabis from a hookah? Will it work the same?

google ftw. You can put some weed in but I wouldn't fill it with weed cause it burns to fast. Better to mix with shish.

So, if I have "self heating" charcoal, what is that? Also, do I need to use a hot plate like that, or can I just use a lighter and hold it with the tongs?

The self heating charcoal can start itself but it burns hotter. Just hold it over a flame with tongs. It will spark so dont do it over flammable liquid.

as a half Lebanese person, a friend of a Kuwaiti, and the owner of multiple hookahs (currently 2, 1 single hose, 1 triple hose. I had one other before but it was arrested), I wanna help ya. That video above is pretty right on. Here are somethings I picked up.


1. You don't want too much water because you won't be able to pull as much smoke, and if you have a cheap hookah, some may bubble out if it's not completely airtight. You also don't want too little water because then well... you're not cooling the smoke down. Ideally you want the water level to be about 1.5 inches above the bottom of the stem. You'll figure it out for your hookah after a few uses. For extra cooling, put ice in the chamber first then fill with water to the normal filling level. When a hookah is well cooled, the smoke will fall towards the ground when you exhale/let it roll out your mouth like a gangsta.

2. When packing the bowl with shisha, you don't want it packed in tight or there will be resistance and very little air. You want to sprinkle it in (like in the video) and fill it to just under the rim of the bowl so that when you cover it with foil, there will be a small pocket of air between the foil and shisha.

3. I usually do a 4x4 pattern of holes using a fork, in the center of the foil. You don't want too many holes otherwise you won't be pulling the air by the coal to heat the shisha. A trick I learned from my Kuwaiti friend is off to the side of the foil (still on the same part as the 4x4) you should try to make a hole that goes all the way down to one of the holes at the bottom of your bowl as a direct path of fresh air. One or 2 of these holes will make sure you do get some air as well as the smoke.

4. Three Kings Coals. They are your friends. Shitty coals sometimes won't light easily, sometimes burn out really quickly, or slightly affect the taste of the hookah. Nothin worse than the taste of charcoal when you're expecting shisha.

5. Rotate the coal around the bowl so as not to keep burning the same area constantly. Ashing the coal helps the coal breathe. After a couple of minutes you may want to take your tongs, pick up the coal and drop it into your tray to knock the excess ash off of it, then put it back on top of your bowl. Helps with taste as well as the longevity of hookah sessions. Also, if you packed it well and left that small air pocket between the shisha and foil, this will keep the coal from sitting on top of the shisha and charring it, which will shorten the session and make it taste pretty funky and sometimes harsh.

6. Personally I've never smoked a bowl of straight cannabis in a hookah. I'm pretty sure it would just burn up quickly not having a molasses/honey coating. I have mixed in ground up bud with shisha. The way I do it is put in a little less shisha than you normally would, then put in your finely ground up green, and mix it up like you're tossing a little sticky salad. Then finish preparing the hookah like normal. I find that Shisha + Bud is an extremely mellow high and is amazingly pleasant. Try Pineapple Surprise (Pineapple shisha + bud) sometime.

7. Be sure to clean your hookah after using it. Not directly after (unless you want to, cause that's even better). But rinsing it out, and using the scrub brush they should've given you will help ensure that you're tasting THIS shisha, not the stuff you smoked last time mixed with what you're smoking now. And if you're going to smoke bud in it, cleaning it helps to keep your shit from just tasting like bud. I know it seems crazy, but some people who may not like/be able to smoke bud might not appreciate Pineapple Surprise.

A well prepared hookah will usually last at least 30 minutes, if not 45 and usually 2 coals.

you can put a little but in there.  the smoke will taste like the tobacco you put in and you will go so high.

citricacid summed it up pretty well.

The coals you most likely have are easy to use. hold it w/ the tongs, and take a lighter to the bottom of it, hold it there for a few seconds and the coal should light itself. I assume thats the kind of coal you have. Now, let the coal heat up a bit, it takes a few minutes (I blow on the coal to speed this process up) - and for me, once the top of the coal has turned grey its pretty much ready to use.

and yes, mix in the bud w/ the shisha keeping space between the shisha and the foil so it doesnt char the shisha. The shisha will be a sticky block when you take it out of the box, tub, whatever. So break it up like you would break up a nug w/ your hands and just sprinkle it into the bowl, don't press down too hard as this will just make it condense again, just tap it down to fit more in while still leaving space.

This is my first hookah. We put red Kool Aid in it to add to flavor. Somethings can add flavor (not me in the pick)


This is my current single hose hookah. I keep this one at home just for personal use.


And unfortunately I don't have a pic of my three hose hookah, but the chamber is like a tiered wedding cake looking shape, painted white (which is kind of annoying when trying to fill it), and then the body and valve area are all metal blue (like the one above) with blue hoses and a white bowl. It has a ceramic windbreaker which is nice for hookah-ing outside.
