I lost a lot of interest and respect for david lynch.  I aw an interview where he basically said  in response to questions that a particular movie had no intended meaning at all.  I was like, wtf?  What's the point then?  Just random bullshit strung together?  Piseed me off.


I liked mulholland drive and dark highway (or whatever it was called) but that shit pissed me off.  I didn't even bother finishing inland empires cuz I figured it would be bullshit with no meaning at all.

I have thought about making a thread on whether David Lynch is pretentious or not. Wondering what Lynch fans think?

honestly I love his work and find it very interesting but I feel like he is a bit full of himself at times.

It's surrealism... It's only bullshit with no meaning at all if you let it be. Whether the creator had an overarching meaning in mind when creating their work is irrelevant. You assign meaning to what you perceive. Searching for meaning is more engrossing and rewarding than there being a meaning and finding it out imo. Do you not like dreams?

Darkened Room is interesting. How the ego copes with brain damage and death is one most the most prominent motifs present in Lynch's work. I quite like the cryptic exploration of the subject in this short and sweet film.  I hate DV cams tho

Rabbits is by far my favorite work of Lynch. I love it so much.

I actually think Rabbits isn't too hard to figure out or put a finger on.

As for Lynch being pretentious, I don't really think so. I think he respects his fans and isn't all high and mighty. He is a bit self indulgent, though. His movies are so similar sometimes, have very similar music, similar motifs, etc... It's like he's creating a big fantasyland for himself to play in and express his childhood (50's & 60's stuff, Hardy Boyz detective stuff, 50's 60's music, etc..) along with his thoughts. Overall I don't think he makes it up to the greatest of the greats but I'm still a big fan.

David Lynch is my kind of style, simple as that. He's more interested in exploring the mystery, & feelings of things. Life is the constant search for the solution, not the discovery of the solution. Lynch films provide me with an exploratory mindset, unlike other directors who use cheap thrills for momentary entertainment. Instead, Lynch engages the watcher by providing an abstract story, in an abstract world.

That's one of my favorite things about him; how he expressions emotion or feeling rather than fact or story. I think with emotions or vibes than clear cut details.
