I'm keeping it as anonymous as can be on this one, i won't even go into which game it is and please don't bother me with any too specific questions. I'm keeping it search engine neutral.
OK its like this: I'm a player of a MMORPG. There my character knows someone, who recently had a terrible thing happen in his Real Life.
The man is up for a very heavy surgery this week. Theres a double digit risk that he will not make it.
Yesterday I was amazed to see him actually come online, from his laptop in the hospital. You know how it is, he was doing what well might be his "final round" of saying goodbyes to people before going under the blade.
I have a special bond with him, but we basically only know each other IC, in character, from the persona we play in the game.
I faced the dilemma - the man could well be dead in a few days - would I extend my goodbyes and good lucks In Character, or would I go OOC, Out Of Character, and present him with my actual self on what might well be the last time of his life.
I decided time was too short and it would be too complicated to go Out Of Character. Thats not how he knew me. I said my goodbyes and good lucks In Character, as the upbeat, gung ho young lad under his command, saluting and the whole deal. Thats how he knew me, that might well be how he'll take memory of me into Infinity if he does pass away. (crying here)
I saw no merit in showing myself OOC. All I wanted to say, could be said IC. As you can imagine it was a coming and going of people, it just would be too complex to go into the real world.
What would you have done if the situation was like this? Stay IC as the comforting persona he knew, or go OOC on what might well be the last time of his life you ever spoke him?
Please guys, no bullshit.
