Gamer - he may die in a few days without ever having known me
    #9636446 -

I'm keeping it as anonymous as can be on this one, i won't even go into which game it is and please don't bother me with any too specific questions. I'm keeping it search engine neutral.

OK its like this: I'm a player of a MMORPG. There my character knows someone, who recently had a terrible thing happen in his Real Life.

The man is up for a very heavy surgery this week. Theres a double digit risk that he will not make it.

Yesterday I was amazed to see him actually come online, from his laptop in the hospital. You know how it is, he was doing what well might be his "final round" of saying goodbyes to people before going under the blade.

I have a special bond with him, but we basically only know each other IC, in character, from the persona we play in the game.

I faced the dilemma - the man could well be dead in a few days - would I extend my goodbyes and good lucks In Character, or would I go OOC, Out Of Character, and present him with my actual self on what might well be the last time of his life.

I decided time was too short and it would be too complicated to go Out Of Character. Thats not how he knew me. I said my goodbyes and good lucks In Character, as the upbeat, gung ho young lad under his command, saluting and the whole deal. Thats how he knew me, that might well be how he'll take memory of me into Infinity if he does pass away. (crying here)

I saw no merit in showing myself OOC. All I wanted to say, could be said IC. As you can imagine it was a coming and going of people, it just would be too complex to go into the real world.

What would you have done if the situation was like this? Stay IC as the comforting persona he knew, or go OOC on what might well be the last time of his life you ever spoke him?

Please guys, no bullshit.
What would you have done?
You may choose only one

If he was a close friend i would have done out of character. Just because you guys met in a game, doesn't mean you have to limit yourself to that world. It might just comfort him more to be there in person.

If he dies and you felt like you really needed to tell him this, then you should have. You are questioning it because you feel sympathy or guilt towards the guy from his life possibly being over sooner than expected. Did you want to eventually tell him at some point?

No.  Don't meet him.

Ask anyone who has any type of experience meeting people in real life versus online.

The majority of the time, people are so vastly different from their online persona that it is extremely awkward.

Bringing two socially awkward people together who live their lives through an MMORPG is a recipe for disaster.

Thing is, we never really went OOC - our personas get along very well, but we basically only know each other IC. And I can't go visit him as he lives on the other side of the world. No phone nrs or email addresses either, we know each other from the game and thats it.

I forgot how fucking weird some people can be when they get involved in an mmo. ITS CRAZY. I watch my cousin go through the same process when i sit hear listening to him talk to his WoW friends. He doesn't act like he does in person. Its just pretty weird how video games can suck people into the character and they create a new persona. I guess some people just escape in different ways.

Are you fucking kidding me?!  Your friend could possibly be DYING and you're worried about breaking character?  Jesus Christ man, call him up as a human being and send your wishes.

Definitely talk to him OOC. I don't think anyone would mind, given the circumstances.

I don't think you need our validation for your actions.  You did what you thought was best or was the best you could do.  I'm not saying you're asking for that, I'm just saying.

I had an "online" persona, once.  That was in the 90's and my first message board.  I was so new to the experience I wasn't sure if I wanted a bunch of strangers to know me.  So I pretended to be that which I wasn't.  It was the last and only time for that.

Video games or whatever it is you are doing are not something I am familiar with.  However, I think people under normal circumstances should just be who they are.  That would include online communication at a message board or face to face.  God knows enough people are never who they seem to be.

What would I have done in your place?  I can't speculate without being you.

Heartfelt sympathies for you and your friend.
