How do I switch guitar chords quickly?

I'm trying to play Heart of Gold on the guitar. I'm too slow switching Em7 to D and also going to C gives me trouble. Other than practice, can anyone give me some good advice?

Observe the tension in your hands and body, and work on eliminating it.  'Pose' in each chord position until you can hold the chord while keeping your fingers and wrist relaxed.  Don't 'stab' at the chords; play very slow and pay attention to how each chord feels on your fingers when you are fingering it correctly.

Great article on practicing chord changes.  That whole website is great, and so is her book.

remember to keep your thumb behind the neck. it helps with stretching. and keep the tips of your fingers rigid.

try to use different fingerings until you can find a position that allows for an easy switch. with em7 to dmaj you can hover your pinky finger over the d (2nd string 3rd fret) then as you switch to d simply apply pressure to that finger. the actual switch after, say hours of practice is very easy, unless youre using bar chords.

scales help with chord transitions, as well as classical music. try to learn this: http://www.classtab.org/jsb1001f.txt

guarantee you youll be better at switching chords after this song

practice is the only thing. I have almost the oposite problem sometimes. I switch to fast and lose dexterity.:lol:

Yeah there really is no trick to it. Honestly, anybody with average finger dexterity, sense of rhythm, and the time and determination to do it can become a virtuoso guitarist. It just takes tons and tons of practice. Try just practicing just the chord changes by themselves over and over and over.

Don't listen to these fools, there is an easier way than practice.  Get surgery and have a robot hand installed in place of your slow human hand.  If you have good insurance, it may even be covered!

One thing (I don't know if anyone mentioned) is that you can buy 'extra light strings'.  You can also adjust the 'action' on your guitar.  Some guitars you barely have to press to hold the string down.

BUT IN REALITY PRACTICE!!!! But that's not what you were asking for so hope ^^helps.:thumbup:

I know a lot of new guitar players hate it when they're told to practice when a certain problem comes up in their playing, I used to be one of those whiners too.  Took me ages and ages to learn how to sweep pick and then I go to play stuff w/o a backing track BOOM what do you know, I fucking suck.  So I had to go back and relearn everything with a metronome, set me back about a year.  Don't make the same mistake I did!  (This doesn't just go for sweep picking, it goes for guitar in general.  Learn the basics properly or suffer the consequences later on).

And accountant has an excellent point.  Instead of using standard 42 gauge strings (if your playing on an electric), switch to something thinner/lighter.  And definitely lower the action on your guitar, fiddle w/ the bridge (if you have a floyd rose and limited guitar knowledge, good luck and god speed my friend) till its nice and perfect.  But one piece of advise that i have to offer, if you take the "easy" way out on this you'll probably end up regretting.  The first guitar that I ever owned and learned the basics on was a classical guitar, insanely hard to play on for first timers (yes, even harder than acoustic guitars).  The action on that guitar was pretty much "omgwtfbbq"; I had mad calosis happening within a day of playing and it hurt like a bitch.  But I'm glad I learned the basics on it b/c when I made the transition to acoustic it was like taking a huge weight of my chest (ermm I mean hands).  And when I transitioned to electric I was like "wow, what the fuck have I been doing all this time" haha.  Hope that helps man.
