Any tricks for improving pc performance?
    #9473975 -

I'm trying to help my uncle out and maybe get his computer running a little faster.  I've already removed all the unnecessary programs/files and defragmented.  Anyone know anything else I can do (for free) to help it along?  I'm not trying to upgrade any physical components as it's a dell dimension running on a pentium 4 with windows xp..

get him a firewall, and perhaps backup his files, and re load windows.

probably has his system riddled with spyware and old registry additions and deletions.

"in times of widespread chaos and confusion, it has been the duty of more advanced human beings - artists, scientists, clowns, and philosophers - to create order. In such times as ours however, when there is too much order, too much m management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. To relieve the repression of the human spirit, they must sow doubt and disruption"

yeah, I already did a reformat not too far back, and he doesn't use it that much.  Just got him 100 years worth of Norton  ..and Norton didn't find any problems.  Meh... I guess it's good enough.

Majorgeeks.com has tons of freeware. There are a few registry cleaners that may speed it up.

Google up "blackvipers" website, and use his "Service configurations" to turn off all unneccessary services.

I like to use CCleaner.  It's free and has a good registry cleaner.  It allows you to back up the registry before deleting anything it finds.  It also can do overwriting on any file it deletes, up to 35 passes.  I run CCleaner regularly and my pc always performs up to it's potential.  Try it, it's free.

-ctrl+alt+del
-task manager
-processes tab
-right click-->end process (or end process tree) for any programs that you don't need
-???
-mad profit/destruction of the underpant gnomes

For example, look at the pic below I just took, anything circled in red is completely unnecessary. so just end those processes and you'll notice significant changes in both load times and speed.  Note: just tinker around w/ the processes under the logged in username (whatever that may be, I blurred mine out in the picture).  Don't go tinkering in the username labeled "system" unless you know what you are doing, either way just look at what I've circled under "system" (in windows vista it doesn't show up as system, it just shows a blank space, but  any other version would show "system" or "system processes").  Remember, if you have no idea what process you are about to end, just read the description on the far right.  You'd be surprised how many programs/processes run in the background w/o the user knowing, do you really need something like say "ituneshelper" running whenever your computer is on? Nope.

Also note that the processes shown in the picture below won't be the same processes you encounter, everyone's computer is running different programs, just use your logic.

Or you know just switch to Ubuntu or any other linux based OS, way faster.
