Penis Envy woes

I just started my first grow about a week ago. I ordered my spores from Hawk Eye and I got 2 syringes of Penis Envy, 1 B+, and 1 Creeper. I chose WBS as my substrate because I do want some bulk spawning and it seemed like the easiest sub to get ahold of.

I soaked the WBS for 24 hours, rinsed it and let it dry for 6 hours. I PCed for 1 hour 15 psi and let cool. I inoculated using the syringe in a glovebox I made out of a cardboard box that I also sterilized a bunch with lysol. I put about 2-3 cc into each quart jar. I had a small PC so I could only cook 4 jars at a time, so I did one set each day.

The 6 jars I did with the 2 Penis Envy syringes have no growth at all and I inoculated them first. The other 2 strains have awesome growth and no contams but Im really bummed about the Penis Envy.

So heres my question: What could the problem be? I followed the exact same protocol for each batch of jars, but only the PE isnt growning. Is WBS a bad substrate for penis envy? Does it just take longer for the mycellium to form? Any insight or help would be great.

A cube is a cube. If one strain will grow on a given substrate, all strains should grow on that substrate.

A big thing you seem to have missed is that you didn't boil/simmer your grains. Some folks here don't do it, but I do, and I've never had problems with grains, only bunk syringes.

Sponsors are usually pretty good about sending viable syringes, but it's entirely possible your spores simply weren't viable.

How long do you think i should wait before I try to get some more syringes? Also, is there a possibility my WBS is too dry? Is there anything I can do with the jar or do I just have to toss everything if it never grows?

I would give it at least 2 or 3 weeks before giving up completely. If it doesn't grow, I would chuck the contents - WBS is cheap.

If you used the same batch of grains and got growth with one set of syringes and no growth with another, while doing everything else exactly the same, then your spores are the only different variable.

For future reference, bringing your grains to a full boil after the 24 soak and then simmering for 10 minutes will help a lot with perfecting your moisture content. The soak softens them, allowing them to absorb more water when boiling, 'locking' the moisture in your grains. You want the moisture on the interior, not the exterior, or you'll have bacterial problems. Also add in a heaping teaspoon of gypsum and a few cups of weak coffee to prevent clumping and to provide a nutrient boost.

When should I add this? Right before the PC?

Also, I'm planning on using 50/50 verm and peat moss casing with perlite for the humidity factor. I'm thinking this because it seems like a pretty easy tek, it's super dry where I live, and I don't want to deal with poo because I'm using such a small apartment for all of this and my gf is anti-poo. Does this tek sound ok for casing? Thanks everyone and I'll post pics when I can (if anyone cares)

are you saying your gonna mix the perlite in with the casing? or case everything then set it in a fruiting chamber with perlite on the bottom? the casing layer provides the moisture you need. perlite isnt necessary

My guess about your jars is that since you inoculated the Penis Envy jars first, you were still working out your technique when you did them, and quite possibly messed something up!

Once you had your technique down, the rest of the jars you made up turned out right!

And about waiting to order more spores - I'd say wait until you get a flush of mushrooms, take spore prints, and make up your own syringes.  If you want to try penis envy again and are out of spore solution - trade one of your other spore prints with a shroomery member for a Penis Envy print.

In the meantime, read read read, and perfect your technique!

If someone knocked 3 different strains w/ a couple jars of each - and they have 1 strain not produce any growth - I think it's safe to say there was something up w/ the syringe.  I suppose it is possible to mess up on 2 consecutive jars, but the chances of that I'd say are alot lower than a bunk syringe.  If you have any of the spores left, knock a little PF-tek jar and see what happens.

Well imadeupjesus, you said that you soaked the grains for 24 hours, dried, and then PCed a batch every day.

Did you soak all of your grains at the same time? because then the jars that you PCd first weren't sitting wet as long as the ones you PCed on later days.  Perhaps this different amount of soaking before the PC process would contribute to your dilemma.

Not simmering your grains is the biggest flaw in your technique, but maybe by letting your grains sit un-pced for a few days you got more moisture into the grain.

or maybe you were soaking day-by-day and this is all conjecture.

My PE rye jars showed almost no growth the first week (I had some small MYC patches). The second week I had explosive growth. Just wait. PE seems to be a slower colonizer. It's just how it is.

i had super fast growth last time i did some penises. must depend on the genetics of the mycelium i guess.

That too. I like I said no signs of growth the first week and then WAM-O that bitch was covered in thick MYC. Broke it up and then 1 to 2 days later I had a 100% colonized jar. Yours grew super fast, but I've also read its not out of the norm for this to be a slower strain. On a side note I don't think 2 weeks is that unreasonable for a jar of grains to colonize that seems pretty normal actually. My costa rica spores grew to 100% in one week now that is a freakishly fast strain (at least my spores were).
